MITCHELL + PHILLIPS, at Beaumaris, Anglesey, etc. - 1800s
« on: Friday 11 April 08 12:22 BST (UK) »

I have wandered in circles to find the marriage, in
1869, in Scotland of  :
WILLIAM PHILLIPS :  MARGARET ANN MITCHELL
:  26 AUG 1869   Edrom, Berwick, Scotland.
William was born in Kingham, Oxfordshire, but I
can find no trace of his birth. Margaret was born
in Beaumaris, Anglesey, and her Mitchell lineage is
particularly travel-prone, with individuals born in
Scotland, Isle of Man, Wales, etc. William moved
between Wales, London, and Ohio, so it is a
nightmare trying to piece their lives together.
Any idea why they chose to marry in Edrom, and
if any of their respective family, etc. shows in the
marriage details?
Margaret had a relative [sister, aunt, cousin?],
Anne, born in Scotland - about 1850.              Mel

Hello,

The marriage as you pointed out is an 'extracted' one on the IGI which means it can be downloaded at the pay per view site www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Unfortunately you would have to part with £6  This will enable you to download a total of 5 extracts - or smemone with spare uits may be able to look up for you?  I'm broke due to a house extension at the moment - good luck.  Regards,   Steve    :O)  Do not be tempted to order a 'certificate' (costing £10)as they give no more info and are only worthwhile for legal resons.

FYI

The extract is well worth getting as it will give the names and occupations of both parents - and whether alive - also the mothers on both sides maiden names.  Also will give the names of witnesses - often family members.  Will also give you the occupations of your couple and where living.

Steve ~ What invaluable info!! Thanks so much.

I rather suspect there is an enclave of MITCHELL family,
or was, to which the migrants returned for christenings.
But where exactly is the intrigue, as each return of the
departees is to a different Scottish Church!!!

A mystery! Or are Scottish marriages a heavenly superior!
LOL!

Hi Mel,

Welcome to rootschat.

There is a thread on here somewhere with hints and tips about how to get the best out of the Scotland's People website (but I can't find it - can anyone help pleeeasse?).

There are some techniques you can use to narrow down your searches to ensure that you have the right person's b,m or d before you use your credits to view.

You can search on the site for free though, before you pay up.

Re why they may have married in Edrom even though Margaret was born in Anglesey? Perhaps her family moved to Edrom after her birth as a possible sister Anne was born there, and so that is where she married?

Good luck!
