Saint John county parishes help please
« on: Friday 11 April 08 02:34 BST (UK) »

Going round and round....AutomatedGen's indexing project has a list of various counties in NB and the parishes contained in them. The page is here:

http://automatedgenealogy.com/censusnb51/

Anyway, SJ county contains 3 parishes for which records no longer exist, Lancaster, Portland and Carlton.

I need a map of these parishes, but all I can find in the net is descriptions such as, "Set off in 1839 from Portland parish..." ...it's like describing a rainbow to a blind bat Grin Does anybody know where there is a map?

My g-g'father was apparently born in Saint John and I am having the devil of a time finding him. If you care, see my Scavenger Hunt in the Common Room... Tongue Tongue Tongue

Cheers,
China

The NB provincial archives have a map - archives.gnb.ca/archives. Click on research tools and then county guides

Hi Chinakay

Have you got this already? (Lots of Moore's listed)

Hutchinson's New Brunswick directory for 1865-66

I couldn't find George in this one, but maybe I'm just missing him.

Hi Janice...somewhere back, I have seen those, thank you very much for your help!

I was sure the one on Smyth St was him...but just recently (of course I can't find it now) I saw a newspaper entry to the effect that a George Moore tinsmith of Smyth St had survived a fire...and it was some years after my George was having children in Montreal. So if one of them is him, it has to be the other one Tongue

I shall investigate further when I have a bit more time...life and a big exam are interfering with my hobby at the moment Grin

Cheers,
China

Woohoo...just saw your second post, that looks interesting! I'll get on to it! After my exam, though Tongue

Many thanks, Janice...cheers,
