Census information Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

For a long time I have been trying to find a connection with Eckington, Worcestershire, to my husband's family of Hawkers, who all appear to be from the Aston area of Birmingham from the 1830s onwards. I recently found a Thomas Hawker, born Ekington, Worcester, and his family on the 1881 census (Family Search) but now all living in Aston, Warwick, England.
What I really want to know was, what happened to this gentleman and his offspring during the following years, if possible, up to the 1901 census
I have traced "my" Hawkers back to William Hawker and Elizabeth Malone and their 15 children. The Eckington connection was a family tale about relatives in the 1950s with a boatyard in Eckington. There was also talk of an Uncle Tom who went into the merchant navy and possibly travelled to Newfoundland and Canada.
I would add that I have actually mentioned part of this thread elsewhere on rootschat so I would kindly ask anyone if anything new could be found. Is this the missing link for which I have been seeking?

This is the chap married to a Caroline in 1881 ?
In 1891, they've moved (back) into Birmingham - St George area, 324 New John Street.
They all say that Brum is their PoB .... - but the son Thomas b1870, seen in 1881, is still with them.
Thos snr is a Bricklayer

Thanks for your reply, Newfster.
Yes, that was the one married to Caroline on the 1881 census. Did you really mean that they ALL said "Birmingham" was their birthplace on the 1891, even the old Thomas? I don't know if you know this but Aston, Warwick, was actually in Birmingham. Birmingham was in Warwickshire before becoming part of the West Midlands.
Can you find them again on the 1901 please?
Just saw your second reply. Thanks. I will read it and take it all in.

Yes, just treating Aston and Brum as seperate Districts as per the census.
and yes, they all declared Birm' as their PoB in 1891, thats why I highlighted it as it differed from 1881 and now we see, from 1901 ...

Hi again
At least two generations of my husband's Hawker family were also bricklayers. It's really vexing that I still cannot find the link here, only the name. Maybe, that's it, just the name.
Could I beg for your generosity once more and ask whether there's any sign of the children on the 1901 census please?
Thanks,
Judy

Yes please.
You are not saying that you have access to the 1911 too yet are you, surely?

Maybe I should now go backwards to find Thomas in Eckington and his roots there? I presume he met and married Caroline in Birmingham c1865 what do you think?
I hate to have to ask you to do all this on my behalf but, rest assured, it is really gratefully received.

I am getting a little excited now. Claverdon is a "hop skip and a jump" away from husband's father's favourite place, which was Yarningale Common, according to the Ordnance Survey map. Husband's father, Arthur, was the one of all the family tales so we might be getting warm!

Sad to see that George was a widower at 34. So young! I haven't heard tell of any of our Hawkers actually being "an Employer". They had 2 servants too! Wow! Handsworth in those times was an "up-and-coming" area with lovely large houses.
I suppose the middle "initials" of both young men on the 1881 would tell us something. Thomas H and George W.
Phew, I can't keep up with all this. How do you do it?
