I think I'd opt for the Works Manager, Sutton Coldfield, as being the one. SC is not far away from Birmingham. Maybe he worked for his brother George?

Yes ok, thank you kindly.

Last Summer my husband and I visited Eckington, Worcestershire, just after the floods in Tewkesbury and Pershore. We wandered around the village, as one does, and even trudged around the churchyard but didn't come up with anything, except a very pleasant pub lunch.

Your latest findings show the grandmother looking after four grandchildren.  Where are the parents? From pauper to employer in two generations - surely this is proof of the benefits of the Education Act 1874(??).

I have to go out now but will look out for further findings from you, for which I thank you again.

Granny has to go and collect the younger Hawkers from school. Nothing changes in life does it?

Just a thought. In the 1851 census do you think William and Sarah were away somewhere? Do you think they were boat-people by any chance? However, I do see that the working family people were down as "ag labs" so that's another red herring.

Cheerio for now.

Indeed !

I suspect that the parents died post 1843 ish, and as you say Granny raised them - dont know why they would be shown as pauperes on the census unless it was declared they were on Parish relief - Susan wasnt ?

why dont you try looking at FreeBMD for the parents death Index entries to complete the picture - oh and see if theres a Birth Entry for Thomas to wrap this up ?

Yes, will do. Thanks.

Couldn't resist coming back to see what you'd posted!

The Hawker family's doctor in the 1940s/1950s was a Dr. Lilley, who was a very reputable gentleman. No relation to you was he?

Bye

Yes, well, I found a Sarah Hawker died Pershore March qtr 1845 and a William Hawker died Pershore March qtr 1847 as you predicted. Charles Hawker was born Dec qtr 1842. I found an Ellen Hawker born Pershore March qtr 1844 Pershore thinking that Sarah may have died in childbirth but it's not quite right. Thomas Hawker was born Pershore December qtr 1840.

There's more to find....

Hi Judy

I've just googled on Hawker & Eckington and found your messages. I'm a descendent of William Hawker from Eckington via Charles, and come from Warwickshire. I lived on Yarningale Common as a baby and was christened in Claverdon church. Charles was an electroplater but died aged 39 of TB. I know a little of the history of George Hawker, and have photos of him. He funded my great aunt, his cousin's daughter, and another relative through school - very generous! I have photos of them both in their school uniforms. My family also went to Wales on holiday with George and his family. George had a holiday home at Llwyngwril, I think. They may have lived there during WW2. I have some holiday photos. I've put lots of the data, including some photos, onto ancestry.co.uk. I don't know whether you can access that.

Do tell me more of your husband's side of the family.

Chris
