A have hit a major brick wall in my research and hope someone can help!
My husband's grandfather, Herbert Stuart Wolfe (b.c1892, Liverpool, England) was a passionate mariner and 'disappeared' when his children were small...that is to say he sailed from Liverpool and never returned...
The last word from him was a letter to his mother, Alice, in 1935 which was postmarked Wellington, NZ. The letter was simply to tell her that 'all was well'.
By all accounts, he was an adventurer and a charmer, and it is not beyond the realms of possibility that he simply chose a better life, maybe bigamously re-married, and set up home in a distant city.
He was a Master Mariner (or Captain) and so I wondered if he would appear on any shipping records. I'm not sure of what information is even kept about this kind of thing. Does anyone know how to get access to these or have any they could look up for me?
If anyone has any thoughts , I'd be so grateful! It would be lovely to solve a long-running family mystery as to what happened to him and where he ended up...
