Where did he go - William SCHOFIELD
« on: Friday 11 April 08 18:36 BST (UK) »

I have previously posted about my brick wall William SCHOFIELD (link below) but it is a while ago now, so maybe there are new resources available?  Smiley

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,163901.0.html

He was born in Oldham in 1859, parents Thomas SCHOFIELD and Mary nee BERRY.  He married Jane Elizabeth NEWTON in 1882 in Oldham (have certificate) - 2 children, Roland Newton, 1890 and Doris 1897.  In 1891 the family are at RG12 3311/120 Page 25 (he is a Commercial Clerk) and in 1901 Jane is at RG13 3819/19 Page 30 still shown as married.

He went to USA - I think I have him on the passenger lists in 1898 where he says he is going to Philadelphia to stay with his uncle, also William SCHOFIELD (born c1835, Oldham).  The address given is 232 Kensington Ave, Philadelphia.

We believe that he died in USA before the family could join him (story is that his Life Insurance paid out after a bit of a fight).

So is he somewhere on the 1900 census?  When and where did he die? Can anyone find Uncle William!?

Any help gratefully received...

No lack of William Schofields in 1900 US: T=103, with 22 born England.  Two in Philadelphia, but neither is either.

I looked at all anywhere who were close to right age for uncle or nephew with no success.

Good luck.

Thanks Nick and Shellyesq,

Looks as if he may remain a mystery for a bit longer!

Hi Sue,

On the 1891 census he is shown as a Commercial Clerk, and on the passenger manifest as a Clerk.

The family worked in the Cotton Mills, he was a piecer in the 1881 census.

Its just that on findmypast, the passenger lists, the one you quoted for William, 1898, it says he is single and a labourer, or am I looking at the wrong one.

Passenger destination: New York, USA

Hi Sue,

I have a copy of the image - it has:

SS Majestic sailing from Liverpool 29th June 1898:

William Schofield, 38, Male, Married, Clerk, Able to Read and Write, Nationality English, Last Residence Oldham, USA port New York, Destination Philadelphia, Ticket to final destination Yes, Money £15, Going to Uncle William Schofield, 232 Kensington Ave, Philadelphia.

It sounds as if you have the right one, but it is clearly Clerk on the image - is it a transcription on findmypast?

Transcription, and the actual image doesn't give anything away, not on there anyway.

So he must be the right one then.

Have you been able to trace his uncle at all? If you knew when his uncle went to the US, or details of any of the rest of his family, that might help.  I see he's also listed in 1897, but crossed through as 'NOB' (not on board), and gives his uncle at the same address there also.

http://olddirectorysearch.com/Philadelphia__Pennsylvania_1890/ has a number of William Schofields in Philadelphia in 1890 but none at Kensington Ave.

Hi jorose,

Ooh, I hadn't seen the 1897 passenger list - must go and have a look for it!  He probably postponed his trip because of the birth of his daughter in 1897.

I did look for Uncle William a while ago but haven't looked recently - he was born in 1835 in Oldham.

Hmm, I remember now why this was difficult last time!  There are a number of William SCHOFIELD's born in Oldham in 1835!  Huh

I think this is him through the census:

1871 RG10 4103/66 Page 10
1881 RG11 4083/57 Page 9
1891 RG12 3311/86 Page 9

However, it looks as if Mayall didn't go with him: RG13 3814/6 Page 3.

I can't see anything obvious on the Ellis Island site.....

btw jorose, where did you find the 1897 passenger list with NOB - I can't see it?

On EI, if you just search for last name Schofield and residence beginning with Oldh, it brings up a bunch of Schofields from Oldham. There are two William entries - ages are off, in 1897 it says 34 and in 1898 38. It also has him indexed as Russian.  Roll Eyes

However, upon examining the 1897 list you'll see he's actually listed as 37, not 34, and "Russian" has been dittoed down from the person above him.
