I am seeking any further info or descendants of Alfred Joseph Pine, who emigrated from Dorset to California ca.1892. He married Evangeline Palifka ca.1902, and had 2 daughters, Ruby and Madeline. I have census data from 1910-1930, and have his death date. He had a grocery store in Red Bluff, Tehama, California. Any help with further info would be much appreciated, as research is difficult from Australia. Regards, Darren

Have you tried to get his obituary for Alfred. Especially if he owned a grocery store, they might have something. Here's a link: http://www.tehamacountylibrary.org/
I also think I found a death record for Madeline:
Madelein V Pine Birth Date: 9 May 1903 Birthplace: California Death Date: 28 Mar 1972 Death Place: Ontario, San Bernardino, California

In the California Voter Registrations from 1900-1928, there is a listing in Red Bluff Precinct No. 4, Tehama County, for:
Alfred Joseph Pine, age 41, occupation: merchant; party: Republican Evangeline Maria Pine, age 37, occupation: housewife; party: Republican

If you have interest, Evangeline is in the 1880 census in Michigan Bluff, Placer Co., California with her family.
And found in 1900, as well. She also has a sister named Ruby.

I guess that's how she named her daughter. There are actually several Ruby Pines in California in SSDI and whatnot.

In another one from 1900-1928, Red Bluff No. 3 Precinct, Tehama County:
Pine, Alfred Joseph, Retired, Red Bluff, Republican Pine, Miss Madelyn Katheryn, Bookkeeper, Red Bluff, Republican Pine, Mrs. Evangeline M., Housewife, Red Bluff, Republican
There's another listing from that time frame and precinct which has just Alfred as a groceryman and Evangeline as a housewife. Both still Republicans.
Another one from same timeframe and location with: Pine, Alfred J., Merchant, Red Bluff, Republican Pine, Mrs. Evangeline, Housewife, Red Bluff, Republican Pine, Miss Madelyn C., Bookkeeper, Red Bluff, Republican
There's also a listing for them in the voter registration from 1930-1944, Red Bluff No. 3 Precinct, Tehama County:
Pine, Mrs. Evangeline M., Housewife, Red Bluff, Republican Pine, Alfred J., Retired, Red Bluff, Republican
From 1930-44 and same location, there is also: Pine, Miss Ruby E., bank clerk, Red Bluff, Republican
I found a Miss Madeline Pine in voter registrations from Ontario, San Bernadino Co. in the 1940's, and it appears that she's living with a Mrs. Annie B. Pine and Gilbert E. Pine. If that's the same one as Kath found the death record for, I'd suspect she might not be your gal.
I found an obituary for Evangeline's sister Ruby from the San Mateo Times dated 21 Jan 1949. She was Ruby Jayne Kinkle, died in San Bruno, California. It says she lived there for the past 8 years, died at Mills Hospital following an illness of two and a half weeks. A native of Michigan Bluff, Calif., she was 64 years old. She resided at 208 Poplar Avenue. Surviving were her husband, William F., and two sisters, Charlotte Brewer of San Bruno and Evangeline Pine of Red Bluff. Entombment at Woodlawn Memorial Park.

Ugh, same name, same age, different people. I do hate when that happens. Battling that myself with an Anastasia Hanlon (go figure).
Back to the drawing board.

Good try, though. There seems to be a few Madelyn Pines floating around in California. I found an article about a marriage for one, but her father was named Michael. There's also one that shows up in two articles in 1950 as being hired as a teacher in Belmont, California. Bookkeeper to teacher is a big change, especially when she was in her 40's, so I'd suspect it's not her, but who knows?

I found one birth in the California birth records for a Pine, with mother's maiden name Polifka, 18 Jun 1908, in Marin County. And several Rubys born, but no Ruby Pine (although one woman's maiden name was Rape )
