McCutcheon/McFarland/Walson
« on: Saturday 12 April 08 01:39 UTC (UK) »

Looking for any info on the origins following people in Tyrone -

William McCutcheon, born 1868 (+/-5yrs) somewhere in Tyrone County, parents John McCutcheon and Mary McFarland, emigrated to Canada about 1887. In April 1894, he returned to Ireland and brought his mother Mary to Canada. The passenger list for the Sardinian out of Londonderry gives his age as 25 and her age as 50 but does not say where in Ireland they were from. Mary McCutcheon would die in Canada in 1899 - her death registration says she was 78. Also, in December 1894, William would marry Mary Maguire in Paris, Ontario, Canada - she was also from Tyrone (we do know a fair bit of her background). We believe that John McCutcheon must have died sometime before 1894 but we do not know when – he may have died before William first emigrated in 1887.

William was supposed to have emigrated with his brother named Samuel BUT I just recently discovered that Samuel McCutcheon did not emigrate until 1891. He arrived Quebec on July 10 1891 from Londonderry aboard the Parisian and he was travelling with Thomas McFarland who I assume may have been a cousin. Both are listed as Farm Labourers and both headed to Paris, Ontario. Does not list their ages or their origins. Samuel supposedly headed west and all family contact was lost........ The passenger list is the first real evidence I have found for his existance other than family stories. Thomas McFarland is a new lead but I cannot find him on the 1901 or 1911 Censuses in Canada - at least not in any area near Paris, Ontario so do not know where he ended up either.

Then, there is a Samuel McFarland, born 1899-1902 (possibly Belfast but not sure - listed as birth place on a border crossing to USA). He would marry a Cassie Walson (born about the same time). Together they would emigrate to Canada (his age given as 29; hers as 26) in 1930 aboard the Antonia out of Belfast. Also listed on the same ship was an Eliza McFarland, age 66 who may have been Samuel's mother. This couple also ended up in Paris, Ontario and my mother can remember visiting them often with her grandmother Mary (Maguire) McCutcheon so I assume there must have been a family connection there. Their headstone in the Paris cemetery says he was born 1899 and that she was born 1897 but that does not match the passenger listing nor a border crossing they made in 1930 to Niagara Falls NY when they gave their ages as 29 and 27. Not sure what happened to Eliza but I think Samuel & Cassie may have lived in Brantford before Paris so Eliza may have died and been buried in Brantford instead of Paris.

If anyone can connect to or knows anything about the McCutcheon and McFarland families listed above I would appreciate hearing from you. Any info on Cassie Walson would be a bonus. THANKS

Found out some more info which might help and trace these people - according to the passenger listing of 1930, Samuel McFarland, Cassie and Eliza were all from Dunbreen, Lislap, Omagh. Apparently Eliza was not 66 years old but listed as E J McFarland and was 26 years old (I can see how transcriptions must get all screwed up from original to internet)

So if the above McFarland's were from Dunbreen, possibly the McCutcheon's I am seeking were also from that very same area - I am hoping the brick wall is starting to crumble after all these years!!!!!!

Samuel McFarland, born 30/06/1899 - Father James McFarland, Mother Eliza Jane Wason - Tattynure

THANKS Mary - I did just find that BUT I did not have the church/location so it seems he was married in the same church as his son........... Now I need to find contact info for that particular church Smiley

Would like to find births for more children - I know there was a Mary and an Eliza Jane(?)......... Mary married a Robert Wilson but do not kknow if it was in Ireland or over here in Canada. I am somewhat confused about the passenger listing of 1930 as I found Eliza listed and her age was 66 (Which could mean the mother) but someone else said the actual image says 26 which would be a sister...........
