I am descended from Daniel McBride & Martha Dues. A son of their's William Dues McBride migrated to New Zealand in the 1860's and settled in Dunedin. My understanding is that he was born in Dumbarton. I also understand that he was a tailor. Daniel & Martha married at Dundonald, Ayr, Scotland on 27th June 1828 - I believe - but beyond that I know nothing at all about them. William and his wife Betsy Millar migrated separately, met in Dunedin, married and had a family of 9 children - my grandfather Alfred Millar McBride was their 7th child. Is there anyone out there who can help me in my research

Hello
Welcome to Rootschat
From the Free census records, (for 1841 only), at www.freecen.org.uk go to the link - you'll find out where they were living, make sure you select '1841'. There is only the one Daniel in Scotland of the correct age - and only a total of 7 of varying ages. Also note that for the 1841 census only - ages were 'rounded' down - therefore they adults could have been up to 35 yrs old..
MCBRIDE Daniel M 30 Tailor Ireland MCBRIDE Martha F 30 Ireland MCBRIDE William M 8 Ayrshire MCBRIDE Daniel M 6 Ayrshire MCBRIDE James M 2 Ayrshire
Civil Parish: Dundonald. Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: Fullarton Folio: 6, Page: 1 Address: Fullarton Street
Regards, Steve :O)
Hopefully others with access to census records will pitch in and take this family forward in the 10 yrly records.
What you'd then have to do is go to the pay per view site www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk £6 buys 5 'extracts. If Daniel and Martha died in Scotland - it would or hopefully should give both their parents names and occupations. Marriage records of siblings to William would also be of value. Copies of the cesnsus records can also be downloaded from the same site.

Thank you for that. I had looked in vain in New Zealand records for any sign of Daniel. He was William's best man and his occupation was listed as "currier". But other than that record there was nothing else. William was named William Dues - taking his mother's surname as is a Scottish tradition, I believe - and he had a son with the same name and also a grandson. I have very little information on the family background. This forum has opened up some lines of investigation but the New Zealand connection is very, very small. Only four of William and Betsy family married. Of those two had no family, one had a son who also did not marry, and my grandfather had three sons. The eldest William Dues had no family. My family is four boys and one girl and, sadly the family line is dying out. I would like to correspond further, away from this forum but I'm not sure how to do that.
Regards Barrie McBride

That is very interesting. Does it fit with a birthdate of around 1838 and parent's details already noted above? If it does then perhaps other members of the family, of whom we know nothing, may also have gone to the US.
