There is a William Henry Kemp baptised at St George in the East on this site http://www.parishregister.com/searchpage.asp You can get a copy of the transcription for only Ł3.25 although I'm not sure how you do that from Oz
Sorry just looked at the IGI and he is on there with father Jno so probably the wrong one
The church may be St George Hanover Square

Hi Jane
This is a fab site http://archivemaps.com/mapco/ with details of which church covered which area.
St George HS (Hanover Sq) straddles http://archivemaps.com/mapco/parish/parish08.htm and http://archivemaps.com/mapco/parish/parish09.htm
I have ancestors born there and they often used to baptise babies or get married in Marylebone parish churches too.
Good luck
Carol

I expect you already have this, but I thought I'd set it out so no one else has to go looking for it in their quest to narrow William's birth down for you
1861Census- they are in Low Fell,Gateshead Co Durham.
William H Kemp head 27 clerk at Bank of England b St George's London Charlotte G Kemp wife 25 b St Pancras George C Kemp 2 b Gateshead William H Kemp 1 b " Frances McOlvin servant unm 18 house sevant b Winlaton Northumberland.

Thanks for that Anna- it seemed odd-seeing as all their neighbours were coalminers
And it'd be a hell of a journey to work each day,if he had to go back down to London

Hi Carol and Anna Can't say how much I appreciate all your help, I love this site its probably the only one I have come across where people genuinely want to help.
The map site is fantastic, Carol, I noticed that the area south of the Strand and adjacent to the river is named St George's - so I have now a much better idea of the district, for want of a better term, I am looking in. The parish map is very helpful for those of us who are not, recently anyway, locals.
By the 1881 Census the family was back in London living at Rose Villa 318 Crystal Palace Road, Camberwall, London.
My thought about the move to Newcastle were that for an ambitious man, some time spent out in the provinces might well assist his move up the corporate ladder. It probably worked, if that was the case given the move back to London. The last child born in Gateshead was about 1868 then a son was born in 1870 in East Dulwich, Surrey - so presumably the family moved in between that time.
Now I am armed with a list of churches and an idea of the general vicinity I can move forward and see if there are any William Kempe's born in 1834 on the record.
What's also interesting is that in the Parish Register there are a number of Kempe's marrying - probably one or two generations earlier - so the 'match' from this end to the connection with the London Kempes of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries is tantalisingly close. The Parish Register also confirms for me that there was a line of Kempes living in London, until now I thought they may have come from another part of the country ,as there are Kempes all over the south of England.
Anyway, thanks again for your help (I wish could assist others in the way you do, but hopefully as expertise grows... but am always happy to fill in any gaps in Australia, if that's of any use to anyone)
Regards
Jane

I noticed that the area south of the Strand and adjacent to the river is named St George's
I'm confused about this - there are lots of St George's in London but I'm not familiar with this one! The narrow strip between the Strand and the river fell mostly in St Martin-in-the-Fields, St Michael Burleigh Street, Savoy, St Mary le Strand and St Clement Danes, so far as I can see. (Before the Victoria Embankment was built in the 1860s this strip was even narrower than it is now).

William, more helpfully than in 1861, specifies his birthplace as "St George Han[over] Squ[are]" in 1871: RG10/726 folio 53 p14
