Thanks for that. I've looked at the census return and it could be him. On the line under his birthplace Northamptonshire, it says Helpstone.
I will have to bight the bullet and send for his birth certificate, but 2 years out seems a bit much.
I have his grandfather's death certificate, his grandmother's death certificate (her cause of death is given as a visitation from God!!),his sister's birth certificate, his mother's marriage certificate and several other marriage certificates for the Francis's children. His mother (if Hannah was his mother) was my g.grandmother's sister.
Thanks again. I just have to find him in 1881 now!
Regards
Francine

I have had a trawl through for Hannah - who did she marry? Did she go to Yorkshire too?
He seems to have changed occupation to carm(an) teamster by 1891, so that should help a bit?!?
I assume you have found the rest of the family in the census to check that he isn't with them?

Hannah married William Wilson in 1865. She'd already had 3 children by then, but none of them went with her when she married. Hannah stayed in Norfolk.
The reason I think that John wm might be Hannah's son is that in the 1901 census Jas Hy Courtman (nephew) is visiting. I think that Sophia married Frederick Courtman and was living in Holbeach Lincs. A Frederick Courtman married Sophia Wilson and I've made the leap of faith that she has changed her name from Bean to Wilson.
My g.grandmother and her family moved to Yorkshire between 1865 and 1869, he could have gone with them. I imagine that there was trouble in Agriculture about that time as my g.grandfather was an agricultural labourer when he moved.
Thanks again
Regards
Francine
