louisa Jilkes b1813 possibly in Amersham
« on: Sunday 13 April 08 08:03 BST (UK) »

Hi all,
This is my first trip into the Buckinghamshire board, and i am hoping somebody may be able to help me. I am trying to trace my Great(x3) Grandmother, according to the birth certificate of my Great(x2) grandfather her name was Louisa Jilkes, which matches up for a marriage between his father Samuel Bayley  to a louisa Jilkes which occurred in 1833 in Sandhurst Kent. I have found this family on the various census, moving from Kent through East Sussex, before they eventually end up in Hastings.  On the census, Louisa's birth place seems to change almost every year, but on 2 entries her birth place is listed as Amersham, bucks. Now i suspect this must be the correct location as the others match her husbands in Kent and then Hastings it self ! In 1841 with the family is also listed a Mariah Jilkes (aged 15)
I have looked on the IGI & Ancestry and the surname Jilkes does not really occur much at all, and none in connection with Amersham. However on the IGI i did find a Louisa Gilks christened on 30 May 1813 in Amersham to a mother Mary Gilks, and also another child Maria on 24 Oct 1824 for Mary this time with a father John Bass. Now i strongly suspect this is my Louisa, due to the this double connection. (Can anybody confirm the IGI entries, as it appears to be an extracted record, but does not list the full details of the batch)
Now my question is would a Bucks accent saying Gilkes sound like Jilkes to somebody from Kent/Sussex border area, hence the difference in names. I suspect it may, as rural Kent/Sussex do have strong accents themselves.
Also if anybody know anything about the Jilkes/Gilks family all information would be greatfully received.

Thanks

Richard

Hi Richard

I have a relative (born & bred in Kent like myself) who was a GILKES by birth and, yes, we pronounce it JILKS.  I'm talking about the Medway towns so no strong accents.

Isn't Gilkes always pronounced Jilks?  I come from the Northants /Buckinghamshire borders and all the people I knew with that surname pronounced it that way.

Hi,

Have you tried entering Mary GILKES in 'search these catalogues' here,

http://www.a2a.org.uk/default.asp

see the result down from 'Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies'.

Maybe she's 'your' Mary or a relative Undecided
