Anyone with anything at all on George Thomas Rogers - I have a 1902 marriage at St. Nicholas Liverpool to Elizabeth Hayes, but his daughter Gladys was born at Birkenhead in the same year. I am particularly searching for his parents names - no father listed on marriage certificate.
thanks for any help you can give,

thanks for this - he is on the marriage cert as a railway servant in 1902 how can I establish which george is the right one without any parents info? I guess working backwards from census? He and his wife settled in Wallasey and had several children there.

pardon my ignorance folks but George on the 1901 census is listed as occupation 'clogger' - what exactly is that? someone who makes clogs? unblocks clogged drains? blocks unclogged drains? my george was a railway servant, so I guess I am wondering could a clogger get a job at a railway?

yes, it says 26 - and thanks Carol for pointing out the other request, thing is that this one is with fresh information since I have now obtained the marriage certificate with no father listed - medhist found one on 1881 and 1901 census which is the only one that makes sense all though the age isn't quite right compared to marriage cert
thanks everyone for your help Ozlib

This is really intriguing me. If he married in 1902 age 26 (remembering age not always accurate) then he should have been born in or around 1876. A systematic search of birth indexes from Jan 1775-Dec 1877 shows only two George Thomas Rogers registered both in oct-dec 1877. one in Aylesbury, Bucks and one in Hackney. Neither are yours as they appear in 1901 census: the aylesbury one is a baker and confectioner living in Battersea and the Hackney one is a soldier in Chelsea Barracks.
I extended the search for one more year either side. In 1874 2 are registered. Tynemouth, Northumberland oct-dec 1874 10b 176 I haven't found him for certain in 1901 census but people didn't always give both their names on census. He appears in 1881 and 1891 as born in North Shields in the tynemouth area. the other born in Edmonton Middlesex Apr-jun 1874 3a 250. Can't find him for sure in the 1901 census.
In 1878 4 are registered. In Highworth wiltshire apr-jun 5a 14, he's still there in 1891 census and possibly 1901. Sheffield Yorkshire but he is a Clerk in Sheffied in 1901, Poole, Dorset but he is a tile maker in Poole in 1901. The other is George Thomas E B Rogers born London St Giles and also accounted for in census.
This leads to several possible conclusions.
His birth was not registered. Common in earlier years but less likely by the 1870s. If he was illegitimate his mother may deliberately not have registered him.
He was abandoned as an infant and given the name later by whoever found him
He was registered as Thomas George Rogers and decided to swap his christian names round when an adult (not uncommon-I have 4 of these in my family tree) so you could try searching for that name.
He was registered as plain George or Thomas Rogers and later adopted the second name. Not that uncommon either.
His surname was registered as Roger or possibly Rogen rather than rogers. Again not uncommon occurrence.
He was born outside England and Wales. Possibly Scotland, Ireland, or further afield. So you need to search those areas.
If you have the birth certificate of his eldest child what does he call himself on that?
One last thought. Perhaps you could get someone in the lancashire, cheshire area to see if there are any surviving school registers which might list him, also look at Poor Law records.
Sorry these are all negative findings rather than finding your relative but it does narrow the field bit.
