My father-in-law gave me this photo tonight and says he thinks it was taken in Sheffield (this is where his family was from), and he believes it was the first car in Sheffield...I was wondering if you could take a look at it and see if you recognise where it might have been taken....
Thanks very much........Cheers...JJ
P.S. I've also posted it on the restorers and photo dating board, hoping it can be brightened up and they can date the photo &/or car....hope you guys might be more knowledgable on the location...thanks again!

I am fairly certain that this is Exchange Street. The 'dark' building near right is the Rotherham House Pub and the lighter building is the Brighside and Carbrook Co-op.
The co-op is on the right. The pub is further to the right and not visible but compare the skyline with your photo. The main tower of the large building (the court house) is just out of sight in your picture but the chimney/smaller tower(?) is there. Actually, looking again at your picture I think the edge of the main tower is visible.
In your picture there is a pole behind the car which must be a tram pole, it oscures the entrance to the Arcade which gave access to the Castle Market.
Now look at this picture, from much later http://www.picturesheffield.com/jpgh/s15485.jpg. Whatever was left (or re-constructed) of the co-op after the blitz is out of shot to the left, but you can see two of the arched windows of the pub. The 'ES' in your photo could be something ALES .
I have another photo (in a book), which is not on the http://www.picturesheffield.com site (but may be on their more comprehensive database available only in the library) It shows the Arcade, the end of the co-op building and the pub all in one shot.
Finally this photo shows the fate of the co-op in 1940. I think at least part of it may have been re-built as I have seen later photos of a smaller building of a different style. http://www.picturesheffield.com/jpgh/s01212.jpg.
Hugh thank you so much, what amazing information!! I sent your analysis to my father-in-law (who's grandfather was the owner of the car in question) and he is absolutely thrilled and so grateful, he's planning a trip to the UK in the middle of the year and Sheffield (and now definitely
Exchange Street
) is on his itinerary!!
Thank you for the time you took to look so carefully at this photo.... Cheers...JJ
