Surname Broll/Brawl/Broal Wigtownshire
« on: Sunday 13 April 08 17:30 UTC (UK) »

Is anyone researching this name. My 4 g grandmother was Sarah Broll who married Andrew Hall in Inch Wigtown 6/2/1823. Sarah's death cert says her parents were John Brawl (coachman)and Janet Stewart (probably Irish). Andrew Hall was born in Ireland Sarah in Leswalt. The only other Broll I can find is a John Broll married Mary McMeiken(various spellings) I think he is Sarahs brother as second daughter is called Janet first son John. Andrew and Sarah lived all their married lives in Castle Kennedy Inch and died there. Is their any other Broll/Brawl etc out there?

Brick Wall time

Thanks Terry

Hi Terry  Smiley

I saw your comments about your Broll's on the MI thread. I sympathise asI have 3 lines that disappear into the mists of Dumfries & Galloway.

A quick look at the IGI suggests that another variation of the name - Browell -  seems to occurs in the North East of England, particularly Northumberland, and long before the Wigtownshire Brolls.

As John was a coachman, I just wondered if you have investigated this possibility.

I notice that John Broal's baptism entry of 12 December February 1800, Kirkcolm lists him as being son of the late John Broal and Jannet Stewart

Sarah appears to have been born circa 1793.

Have you looked at the Kirk Session minutes? There may be mention of mort cloth fees, etc.

Sancti - I'm sure Terry has all those. He's been searching for nearly 30 years    Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

OK - - but he was the son of the late John Broal wich is the most interesting thing.

Most of what you're getting from SP is on the IGI by the way  Smiley

Hi Gadget,

I did look at that possibility, I think I've tried every variation I can think of. In the 1841 census Sarah and Andrew both said they were born Ireland but all subsequent census's she says she was born Leswalt. My gran's cousin who died in her nineties about three years ago said her mother said- 'her mother had lovely Irish linen that had come down the family'. That would have been Sarah's daughter. It could have come from Andrew's family but I don't know. I have got no further with Andrew Hall either but when you don't know where in Ireland they were born it's nigh impossible especially with a name like Hall!

The name Broll/Brawl has intrigued me for years now (it is on the MI for Sarah and Andrew as Brawl). I guess that's what genealogy is all about.

Thanks for having a look for me it is appreciated I'm hoping to get up to Edinburgh soon so will sit with the Leswalt OPR. When I last picked up this thread and was up there I only looked at Inch OPR. So for the moment I'll keep on hunting.

Many thanks again

Hi again Terry

The old coach routes between Scotland & Ireland would have gone through there and across D & G and down to Carlisle.

John was bpt. Kirkcolm which is slightly to the north of Stranraer. I've checked the online parish list for 1684 but no mention of the surname in Kirkcolm:

http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~leighann/1684/nkirkcol.txt

or in any of the other parishes.

He's not listed in the Kirkcolm death index:

http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~leighann/parishes/kirkcolm/deaths/intro.html

I presume you've been through the Wigtown Free press listings?

Hi Gadget and Sancti,

I did have the information on John Broll/Brawl etc baptism but it just goes to show you're never too old to learn because I didn't know he was the son of the late John B. Definately need to go through the OPR /Kirk Sessions. Sancti I did have the information on John B/Mary Mc's children but not the John b 1818 to Jane Broll so will also pick that up.

Thank you both very much for taking the time to look at my query and by the way Gadget, he is a she!! Everyone makes the same mistake, it's the spelling. I have put the story of this in my 'tree'. I was the first child and my mum and dad had only thought of a boys name. My dad had said to my mum at the bedside 'well what are we going to call her' He had taken my mum a box of Terry's All Gold and she said I like that name Terry so that's the story of how I got my name!! My dad said my grandad said thank goodness you didn't take her a box of Bassets Liquorice Allsorts. All true!!

Anyway thanks again to you both much appreciated.

I'm sure the old coach routes are linked in and have you checked out the Northumberland Browells?

Hi Gadget,

Yes I have looked at the Northumberland Browells but couldn't come up with anything. I have just recently picked this line up again I took early retirement in May and now have more time to spend on my tree so today I am going to sit down and refresh myself with the Hall/Brawl Broll family. No I had not been through the Wigtown Free Press I just picked up that one yesterday later on so will do that. John must have died relatively young I am assuming unless Sarah and John were the last children rather than the first but going by the fact that there appears only to be the now 3 Brolls John 1800 Sarah 1796 and Janet giving birth to John in 1818. As this John 1818 has no father named I assume illegitimate, strangely enough Sarah also had an illegitimate daughter  called Jane Pettigrew b 1816

Sarah would have been born 1796 aged 75 1871  85  1881 and died 1882 aged 86.

You have given me much to think about am going to do a bit of digging this afternoon especially on the coach routes.

Thanks again

terry hastie - I stumbled on your post by chance and think my grandfather of 6 generations John Broll (Braul) could be Sarahs brother.

My family tree is online at www.broll.myheritage.com

Have you been able to find out any more information about John Braul (Father)? Although I haven't been able to dedicate a lot of time to it my searches have so far been fruitless.

Hi Cogan83, Smiley

If your 6g grandfather is the John Broll/Brawl who married Mary McMechan etc then I guess we will be related. Unfortunately I have found no further information on John Brawl/Broll senior, my information is quite sparse on this family.

I have followed my line from Sarah to present day quite successfully but as I say not beyond her parents. Sad

I have 7 children being born to John and Mary McMechan and I think marriages for 3 of them and children from one of the marriages. Which line did you come down.

I would be interested to know the children you have for John Broll and Mark McMechan (I have her listed as Mary McMeckan so I may have missed something there).

My line from John Brawl (Father) is John Brawl > John Broll / Brawl (married to Mary McMeckan> John Broll (married to Jane McCulloch) >William Broll (married to Mary Sloan) >Andrew Broll (married to Margaret Kelly) > John Kelly Broll (married to Hannah McDowall Ferris) > my father Alexander Kelly Broll and then me.
