McLeish/Culley
« on: Thursday 09 March 06 19:00 GMT (UK) »

I have been searching and searching but am unable to find out anything past my grandmother being born - Mary Alexander McLeish 1905. On her birth certificate it states she was illegitimate mother Euphemia Alexander & Andrew Ford McLeish. Now this is my first problem, secondly, Culley - my grandparents were John Culley who married Mary McLeish, I think his parents were Thomas Culley and Sarah Gethins but cannot be sure because it is only a guess from a time period close.
It is so frustrating trying to do this from overseas; I have already spent a fortune, well a lot of money  Wink on scotspeople to really not find any information out. What is weird also, my dad's family was not exactly small and yet I cannot locate any relations/ancestry files that are even looking for the same thing.
If anyone has either Culley/Mcleish in their ancestry could they please help me
thanks heaps

Hi Jacki,

From the index on ScotlandsPeople,
John Culley married Mary Alexander McLeish in 1924, in Dundee, district of St. Andrew.

You will be able to download this certificate, which should give his parents names.  Put in their names, Dundee City then St. Andrew and it should come up.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Dorothy

have you looked for Euphemia Alexander and Andrew Ford McLeish in the 1901 census? I think that wouldbe my next step - after all, neither is a very common name, so youmight just be in luck.

Maybe it is frustrating to try to do all this from overseas - but imagine trying to do it without Scotland's People at all!

thank you ...... now i might sound stupid but the census yes i have tried well i think i have..... what i think now after doing it all today AGAIN looking and coming up with nothing for Euphemia Alexander and Andrew Ford McLeish, is perhaps they were never married........ i have a copy of my grand mother's birth certificate and it says on it illegitimate, and after searching the cobwebs in my brain i remember my dad saying while he was alive, granny Nicoll, and I remembered an Uncle of my dad's whose name was Nicoll, i never knew which side of the family it came from but i did come across a Euphemia Alexander marrying a Christopher Nicoll - so that is perhaps where i am going wrong here; looking for a marriage that perhaps didnt exist?
But like a true Aussie of Scots origin, I will continue to plod on....... Grin
