Royal Warks 6th Regt of Foot
« on: Monday 14 April 08 09:56 BST (UK) »

Kia ora
I have looked at the Museum sites for the above and cannot find an email address!
Can anyone help please?

Has anyone had any luck with trying ot find an individual soldier's name on their lists? I have great gran's brother in uniform but no idea of which Regt he joined and the photo I have is not clear enough to recognise any badges/insignia etc.

James was born 1853 and has disappeared by the 1871 census. Family rumour says to India.

Any guidance gratefully received!

Hello Marlene
Put this on the armed forces board, that's where the experts are & put the picture you have on as well.
The 6 th. Regt. doesn't exist anymore & would have been amalgamated into the the Warks. Regt.

Hi Marlene
this probably won't help with the info you're looking for, but you might find the following site of interest:

Kia Ora Annie
Roll Eyes Poor lad he only got 2 - James + FAIRY and he possibly changed the latter when he joined,  for obvious reasons!

Anything to make my life difficult! He's the only one of great gran's family I cannot find after 1861!

Cheers

Queen Victoria's Wars

In 1832 the 6th became a Royal Regiment and their title was changed to The Royal (1st) Warwickshire Regiment. The 6th took part in the 7th and 8th Kaffir Wars in South Africa and received the Battle Honour South Africa 1846-7, 1851-2-3. Service on the North-West Frontier took place between 1849 and 1868. The Regimental Depot was established at Warwick in 1873 and following the 1880-1881 Cardwell Reforms, the regimental title became The Royal Warwickshire Regiment. In 1898 the regiment fought at Atbara and Omdurman during Lord Kitchener's reconquest of the Sudan and saw service in the Second Boer War at Johannesburg, Diamond Hill and Belfast.

Kia Ora Annie
The reference to the NW Frontier is of interest. My photo shows a boy (mid teens? ) and was taken in Norwich (about 1870 the photographer was in business).

James is in uniform (but no insignia can be identified)  He has spurs on his boots indicating cavalry?

He was born in Pailton but the family moved to B'ham (St Thomas area) before 1857. James is on the 1861 census with his family, but then disappears.

My theory is that he enlisted in B'ham, training took him to Norwich, he had his photo taken and then went o'seas. Family story says news was received that he was "missing in action" in India.
My gt grandmother left England in 1878 bringing the photo with her.

I am sure the Military would have lists of those who died/ were missing in action  from O'seas excursions  and that's why I thought the Museum might have information.

Thanks for your help - tis interesting that the Royal Warks were in the right area around the time I want viz 1868- 70!

Cheers
