James Proud - Chr near Blackhill c1847
« on: Monday 14 April 08 12:01 BST (UK) »

I'm trying to find the christening of James Proud who was born 8th November 1847 at Blackhill, Benfieldside.
James' mother was Sarah Proud, there wasn't a father on the certificate.
Does anyone have a list of parish churches near Blackhill?
I might then have a chance of searching for the christening within a certain radius/walking distance of Blackhill.

Thanks,

Nige

Here's the place name index from Durham Record Office, well worth bookmarking  Grin
http://www.durham.gov.uk/recordoffice/dro.nsf/vwebplaces

If you check out Blackhill and Benfieldside and nearby Consett on this index you will see they were all in the Parish of Lanchester until 1848.
A baptism could also possibly have been at a non-conformist church, but these aren't included in this list.

Unfortunately the bishops transcripts for lanchester jump from 1841 to 1855.

It looks like you'll need a records office lookup  Sad
