I am not from England - I am hoping Devonshire is in Devon??? I am looking for the names of the parents of Joshua Reynolds who was born in Plymton (or Plympton??) Devonshire on 10th July, 1723. The only information I have on him is that he had a son, Thomas in C1750 in London. Any help at all would be gratefully received. Maxene

Maxene
as an aside, I had to do essays on him when I was doing A level Art History
It's such a long time ago though that I've forgotten most of it, only that he was born Plymouth and became president of the Royal Academy

Gadget, I have just been reading a bio on Google - it can't be the same Joshua. The famous one was a bachelor who lived with his sister and did not have a lot of success with women. Maybe I need to work backwards from the younger Reynolds. I have Thomas Reynolds born C1750 in London, who married Hannah Beale in Stepney in 1766. If I can locate his birth registration - or death registration, it may give me some clues on his parentage. Someone has misled me (and I was probably glad to be misled) about the father being Joshua Reynolds. Oh, well - back to the drawing board. Maxene

So how did you think that his father was Joshua, Maxene?
As you say, you'd best check up on Thomas' baptism. I don't recall Sir Joshua having any illegitimate children.

added - the IGI has the bpt. of a Thomas 29th May 1745, St George in the East, Stepney. Parents John Reynolds and Elenor

Hello, Gadget. I have taken the word of a group of people who have been researching my mother's ancestry (Honnery/Omery, Reynolds, Singleton, Fraser) for about 15 years and am slowly learning that I need to check their "facts". I am guessing they presumed that Joshua was the father because he named his son Thomas and Thomas was the name of one of his mentors. Thomas (my ancestor) married in 1768 so the date you have given for John's child would still fit the picture. I think I'll try and locate Thomas' death certificate; it may help me. I agree that Joshua is only a remote lpossibility as the parent. Given his fame and the amount written about him (I've only scratched the surface in the last 24 hours), there would at least be some reference to or suggestion of illegitimate children. Thanks for your knowledge and help. Maxene

Hi Maxene, I have also recently been tracing back my father's side of my family and I was today informed that I am (apparently) a great, great... grand daughter of Sir Joshua Reynolds. My great grandma and her sister tried investigating this when they were alive, but didnt get anywhere as the internet was not around then! I would be very interested in your history, as we could well be related. I look forward to hearing from you.
Many thanks Alex

Hi Alex. I have done a bit more checking and...the famous Joshua Reynolds is not my ancestor, as much as I would like him to be. Cheers, Maxene
