Edward Baslow McGovern
« on: Monday 14 April 08 11:22 UTC (UK) »

I am looking for the birth date of Edward Baslow McGovern, born in 1799. He married Elizabeth Shannon and they had a son, Hugh McGovern, born in Sligo in 1822. Can anyone help? Thanks, Maxene

Hello Maxene,

There are three items required when searching for Irish ancestors.

1. Denomination.
2. Parish.
3. Townland.

You'll have to rely on Church records as your ancestors were born before Civil Registration was introduced in Ireland. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.

The list below may give a rough idea where your ancestors lived in Sligo.

McGovern: Griffiths Valuation - Sligo 1858

John, Drangan or Mount Edward, Ahamlish
Edward, Town of Collooney, Ballysadare
Michael, Cloonlaheen, Kilfree
James, Cuilmore, Kilfree
John, Knocknaskeagh, Kilfree
Michael, Knocknaskeagh, Kilfree
James, Mountirvine, Kilfree
John, Jr., Mountirvine, Kilfree
John, Sr., Mountirvine, Kilfree
Michael, Mountirvine, Kilfree
Bryan, Boleymount, Killerry
Owen, Glen, Kilmactranny
Bridget, Cashel, North Achonry
Thomas, Cabragh, Shancough

Thank you for your guidance Christopher. I am not able to establish any of the things you listed. the records must exist as "someone" has been able to establish birth dates for some of his children. What I have been able to find out is that the wife, Elizabeth Shannon died and Edward remarried to Margaret Stanley and they had 4 children (whose surnames were McGoveron) The family migrated to Australia in 1859. The children were all born in Sligo - Christian names Robert Stanley, Johnston, Hannah and Gilbert. Family documents list Edward as "musician and military" - maybe I should be looking in Irish military records? Thanks again, Maxene

Maxene,

If his second wife, Margaret Stanley and all the children from that marriage were born in Sligo she may well be related to Arthur Stanley who resided in the parish of Kilshalvy and is the only person of that name listed in the Primary Valuation of 1858. I have a certain amount of information on that Stanley family. Arthur Stanley was living in the parish of Kilfree at the time of the Tithe Applotment Books (1835) and you will note from the list Christopher provided that is the parish the McGoverns were mainly concentrated in 1858. The Stanleys were Church of Ireland and I believe were from Roscommon, however Arthur Stanley married a catholic which appears to be the reason for his downfall.

Good luck,
J.T.A.

the records must exist as "someone" has been able to establish birth dates for some of his children.
The dates of birth could simply be 'someone' estimating their ages from dates of death and there might not be any surviving church records for baptisms.
