Christie-Middlesex and Australia
« on: Monday 14 April 08 08:05 BST (UK) »

Looking for information on the family of my great great grandfather James Scott Christie, he was a convict sent to Tasmania in 1842. His fathers name was James, a Tobacco and Snuff manufacturer in Golden Square, he also had two brothers John a parliamentary secretary and William a master baker, We have found a lot of information in regards to James Scott but not a lot on his two brothers and mother and father.

Cheers and thank you for taking the time to read this post Smiley

According to James Scott Christie's letter this is his father's death registration.

http://member.melbpc.org.au/~albonser/christies.html

Deaths Mar 1838
Christie  James    St James Westminster  1 135

You can order the death certificate from the GRO

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

If James Christie senior was buried

'He died in January 1838 - buried in the famed Bunhill Row Burying Ground'

Then he was non-conformist. A look up request for Bunhill Row Burying Ground should give you the names of anyone buried with him.

A possible for his brother William

A possible for brother William

Bow Lane St Mary Le Bow London
William Christie 35 Bist (Biscuit) Baker born Middlesex
Charlott Christie 35 not born Middlesex
plus 2 baker journeymen

Adult ages (those over 15) usually rounded down to the nearest 5

This may not be the same man

Prerogative Court of Canterbury will

Will of William Christie, Baker of No 31 Bouverie Street , City of London 02 April 1842 PROB 11/1960

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/

A possible for John Christie if he lived in London

1841 census HO107 736/10 Enumeration schedule 6
Queen Street St James Westminster
Elizabeth Christie 48 (but might be 68) Ind.(Independent means) Scotland
John Christie 25 Solicitor born Middlesex

1851 census HO107 1485 folio 226
36 Broad Street St James Westminster
John Christie Lodger Unmarried 34 Solicitor's General Clerk St James Westminster Middlesex
Joseph Ivory Visitor 16 Carpenter Deptford Kent

May not be his death registration but I can't find him on subsequent censuses

Deaths Sep 1854
CHRISTIE  John     St James  1a 313

These baptisms might have been later than the births but otherwise they don't fit the birthdate James Scott Christie gives but do fit this John, so he may be a red herring

JOHN CHRISTIE
Christening:  31 MAR 1816   Wells Street Scotch Church, Saint Marylebone, London
Father:  JAMES CHRISTIE
Mother:  ELISABETH

JAMES CHRISTIE
Christening:  17 MAY 1818   Wells Street Scotch Church, Saint Marylebone, London
Father:  JAMES CHRISTIE
Mother:  ELIZABETH

WILLIAM CHRISTIE
Christening:  13 JAN 1822   Wells Street Scotch Church, Saint Marylebone, London
Father:  JAMES CHRISTIE
Mother:  ELIZABETH
