Parish records for Thorpe le Soken
« on: Monday 14 April 08 15:11 BST (UK) »

I seem to have a a number of relations all born and resided in Thorpe (Hubbard, Scott, Mills and Starling).

I have followed them back as far as I can via census info and BMD indexes but then the trail runs cold and the IGI does not provide any answers.

Living in the West Midlands getting to the Essex Record Office is not an easy option; have these records been transcribed and are they available to buy or view?

If any body happens to have access to the Thorpe le Soken records my particular interests are

John Hubbard born about 1807 (g-g gf)
Sarah Starling born about 1809 (g-g gm)
their marriage about 1829?

Allen Scott born about 1826 (g-g gf)
Maria Mills born about 1826 (g-g gm)

Allen Scott's parents - Peter born about 1796 and Mary ?? born about 1796
Maria Mills parents - Joseph born about 1796 and Mary?? born about 1791

All of the above events I have reason to believe took place in Thorpe le Soken.

regards

Hi

As I live in Chelmsford I can easily visit the ERO and have done so for other Roots chatters.  As (on my father's side) both maternal and paternal grandparents had their origins in Essex when I visit for myself, I can dip into other parish records.

I presume you would like the marriage record for John Hubbard and Sarah Starling.  As it took place c1829 this would record (if legible) date and witnesses.  You already have the bride's maiden name.  Again for Allen Scott's and Maria Mills' parents you would like their marriages so as to try and find out the bride's maiden name?  Is this correct?

Presumably they married in the parish church and if you would like when I next visit (I'm afraid I can't give a date though hopefully within a month or so) I'll have a look for you.

Regards
Deborah

Hi Deborah

Apologies that I have not been able to get back to you sooner and thank you for your most generous offer.

I would be most grateful for any information on John Hubbard and Sarah Starling. My information is that the wedding took place in Thorpe, but they both were born in Clacton.; John at Great Clacton and Sarah at Little Clacton.

With Allen Scott and Maria Mills; I think I have discovered the marriage at Thorpe in 1848 and have recently applied for a certificate from the GRO. Census information suggests that they were both born in Thorpe about 1826 and I would like to get hold of birth/christening records for them if that were possible.

And yes for the Allen & Mills parents anything more than I can infer from the census records would be most welcome.

This seems to be an awful lot to ask; once again I am amazed at the generosity of rootschatters and very grateful for the very positive help I always receive whenever I come to a dead end and can see no way foward.

I really must visit Thorpe at some time - it's where my Mum was brought up by her Hubbard grandparents.

thank you once again

Hi Alan

Have noted all that you say and will endeavour to find as many answers to your questions as possible when I next visit the ERO.

Parish records (if you find even one piece of a puzzle) can be an amazing source of information especially as you can trace families (if they stayed local) across baptisms, marriages and burials.  I'm beginning to think I'd have made a good detective!

Will be in touch - Deborah.
