strand
« on: Monday 14 April 08 15:36 BST (UK) »

Hi.

i have an ancestor who states that they were born "the Strand", London.
I take it that this is likely to be the Strand district/parish and not the street.
if so, how many parish registers would i have to trawl through for the strand district.

Thanks
Iain.

Hello, Iain,

The Strand registration district contains the following churches.

St Martins inthe Fields C 1855-1965
St John the Evangelist, Drury Lane  C  1838-1853
St Paul, Covent Garden  C 1653-1945
St Michael, Burliegh St.  C  1849-1905
Savoy Chapel  C 1680
St Mary le Strand  C  1588-1882
St Clement Danes  C 1558-1944
St Ann Soho  C  1686-1931 now Westminster, was also under Strand until 1st July 1868

What year are you looking for ?  Why not post name & date, we may be able to help.

You can also check these churches in the Hugh Wallis site that is similar to the IGI but can be searched by church, then surname instead of the IGI by surname.

Hi Meliora.

Now i'm gonna bore you.
I too found this several years ago and happily added the details to my tree thinking st martins in the field and her father being John which i already knew..........this must be her i thought.

her father John HUTCHINS was a chair maker according to her marriage cert.
Unfortunately i checked the census returns in 1851 and came up with two John hutchins one spelt hutchings who were both chairmakers but whose wives were not sarah. From memory one was ann and the other elizabeth.

so unless Sarah died and John remarried i'm treading water.
