John would usually be Johannes, but Joannes (and therefore Joannem) is also found.
I think you are correct about Martha being a sponsor to John.

The age given in the Marriage Allegation only indicates that he was at least 21, i.e. of full age. So he may have been older.
If her father as George Anson Thompson, then her mother was Ann Vivion/Vivian and they married 29 June 1769 in Portsea.
Children: ?James 21 Jun 1778 Henry 30 March 1783 Mary Vivian 9 Mar 1785 Isabella 22 Mar 1786 Grace 5 Dec 1787
But there is no record for Jane. However, at the record in Winchester there is a letter from George to Lieutenant John Poore on occasion of his marriage with his granddaughter Martha Sone Midlane, 4 Nov 1824. Didn't you mention her in your other post?
George Anson Thompson was buried 12 Jan 1829 aged 82. He was baptised in Portsea 29 Jun 1746, which would fit. Father was William. George left a will which you can download from the National Archives site for £3.50. It might mention some family members which will hep you sort it out.
George Anson Thompson was a dockyard officer (1st Clerk to the Clerk of Survey) from July 1764 until July 1822. His name appears in the entry service books under ref ADM 29/8/44 at the National Archives.

Oh Nell, thank you so much.
I have asked my son who lives in London if he fancies a trip to Winchester as there is a lot of material at the Record Office in the Poore papers regarding George Anson Thompson as well as later members of the Midlane family. I think I have laid on the guilt so that he will make the trip!!
I hope to get to the Library to the Catholic Records book this week. If you ever have anyone who needs look-ups in that book, (Catholic Registrations in the Parish of Brockhampton) please ask me. It may take a week or so for me to get it but it is very worthwhile, as I said before, because of the smaller community of Catholic families. Many of them are mentioned many times as godparents and wedding attendants are also recorded; Bedhampton, Emsworth and Warblington are part of the Catholic parish.
Cheers, judb
