I believe that Joseph Stanlake, 1790, was living in Portsea in 1841. In 1846 his occupation was Shipwright.
Can anyone see him and his family in the 1841 census?

On the ball as usual, I see. Thanks for the record details. It's interesting that they are not from the county. Can you see them in '51? this may give a clue to where they were born.
Regards
Bob

Here are the baptisms for two of the younger children :
Emeline Sophia Sarah 23 Dec 1832 James Henry born 23 Oct 1835 bapt 22 Jul 1838
Joseph Charles 9 Apr 1841
There is a record in the Pay Dept records at the National Archives for Joseph Stanlake, Superannuated Sawyer, who died 28 September 1854. "Notes on executor's application for money owed by the Royal Navy. Will attached" Ref: ADM 45/33/62
No idea if he is yours.
Looks like they came from Deptford before they arrived in Portsea. Mary Ann b 1815, Joseph b 1817, Elizabeth Nancy b 1821, Jane Agnes b 1823, William Sampson b 1826.

Jane Agnes STANLAKE Spouse: John NEWNHAM Marriage: 25 NOV 1844 Saint Thomas, Portsmouth, Hampshire
Jane Agnes STANLAKE Dec Q 1844 Portsea Island v.7 p.278 John NEWNHAM with same details.
This looks like them in 1851, she's transcribed as Igniss from Dartford and that's what the image looks like

In 1861 she is Jane born Deptford 1824, RG9/456 f.103 p.30 Kingston Surrey. Let me know if you would like this transcribed

Daisy and Nell
Sorry for not replying sooner. I was away all day yesterday. Thanks for all your help.
The transcription for 1861 would be nice as would details of Joseph Stanlake's will.

I can't help you with any details of his will - I just quoted the information from the National Archives catalogue. There does not appear to be a will listed in PCC or at Hampshire Record Office. I think that the will may be attached to the document whose reference I gave earlier, which can be found at Kew.

Interesting to note.
Charles Newnham married Elizabeth Nancy Stanlake 1844 Alverstoke (Jane Agnes' sister).
Can you see John, 1825, and Charles,?, in the 1841 census?

Sorry, I think there are too many John and/or Charles NEWNHAM (+ many variations of the name) to be sure who's the right one. I think getting the marriage certs would be the next best step.
