We are looking for John  and Clara Haines in the 1851 Census. They were living in Hertingfordbury in the 1841 Census aged 60 and 56 respectively.

This may be Clara's death but unfortunately the reference hasn't included age at death

Hi Simon,

The Hertingfordbury Parish Register records the burial of Clara HAINES of Hertford on 26th September 1856 age 75.

Thanks for this very interesting snippet of information.

In the 1841 Census Clara's age is recorded as 46 (I think) which would indicate that she was born in 1784 and therefore 72 when buried.

However I would imagine that these 2 woman are one and the same. Perhaps her birth date should be 1781. She came from Petworth in Hants. No doubt her baptismal record is on the local Parish Register.

However her husbands date of demise still remains a mystery!

I have checked the GRO Death Index from 1841 - 51 but there is no sign of a death for John.  I only checked the HAINES spelling and not any variants.

Assuming his death is not missing from the index, and it could well be, and that he is not indexed as HAYNES or another variant spelling, he should be on the 51 census.  He seems to be hiding though.  Do you know his birthplace?

Both John and Clara should be on the 1851 but neither appear on any of the 46 images that make up Hertingfordbury. On the 1841 census Clara's age is given as 55 and John's profession is Land Steward.

I can find a Clara Haines on the 1851 age given as 69 born Petworth, Sussex, Married and annuitant. Visitor in the household of James and Clara Stout.
James was born Norfolk and his wife Clara was born Hertfordshire. Clara Stout was 38 so maybe daughter of John and Clara??  James is a hotel Keeper and the address is Hotel Brentford, Brentford, Ealing Middlesex.

I think this looks promising - census reference is HO107/1699 Folio 363 Page 30

Lots of staff recorded as well

Just to push this along a little on the 1861 Clara Stout's birthplace is given as Hertingfordbury so if someoneone could find a marriage for a James Stout to a Clara Haines Grin There is a 22 year old daughter called Feaney on this census born in Old Brentford.

Or maybe you have this information - if not let me know and I will post the 1861
census.

Thanks for your info. I think the 1861 Census should read Fanny Stout 22 as in the 1851 Census (not Feaney) In that Census she was b Twyford, Berks, but this may be incorrect.

I think Fanny married a Henry Besly (he b 1834) and they had 8 children. She d in 1908.

I would be pleased to see the 1861 Census. Does it give James Stout's b as 1795 Norfolk? The reason I ask is that on the IGL it records him as b 1808 in Twyford and Clara Haines also b in Twyford (which of course she wasn't) Her parents are also recorded at the same place (which of course they weren't either) What is it with Twyford?Huh??

I think James & Clara m 10/11/1835 at Hertingfordbury. Clara d 1891 but don't know when he d. Clara is recorded as being b 1812 but bap 30/10/1814 which she shared with her brother George - this gap between b and bap is out of keeping in this well-to-do family

Problem is I am having to re- research this family since my hard drive was replaced. I think someone found a reference to John Haines on the 1851 Census, with his name misspealt (hence the problem). Unfortunately I can't remember if it was this web site or the other.....

Here we go with the 1861. On closer look the daughter's name appears to be spelt as Faney with an elaborate 'F'

You say someone may have found John Haines on the 1851 - do you re-call the birthplace (as requested by Rick as well) - this will cut down searching time considerably

Where did you find Fanny Stout on the 1851? She isn't with mum and dad

Hello

John was bap 19/2/1781 in Kirdford, Sussex. I found Fanny Stout on the 1841 Census as a niece staying at John & Clara Haines's house at Cole Green, Herts. But you're quite right she wasn't on the 1851 Census.

Moreover Clara jun, James and William are not on the 1851 Census. James is not on the 1861 Census, but both he and Clara are on the 1881 Census (though no Edward, her husband)
