Hi
I had received some information that suggested my 4 times Great Grandfather John Macleod was a brother of Donald Macleod of Lewis. I had found some info on Donald and it said his father was John Macleod Tacksman of Hacklete. It has been hard too track anything on these people as I had no idea were in Lewis they had lived until I found the name Hacklete at least now I have some idea were too look in Lewis.
Thank you very much for your help McLeod/Syme

If you can give me names and dates, I could ask around while I am in Bernera next week.

Hi
I finally received the book The Macleods of Lewis and it has some of the information I was looking for. It said John, tacksman of Hacklete from 1686 and mentioned in 1726. I had received some letters from my Macleod family after they had died and a Mary Macleod born in 1832 (who wrote the letters ) said her G. grandfather John was a brother to Donald Macleod of Lewis. I than found from the book that Donald's father was John Macleod, tacksman of Hacklete. The only problem I have now is in the book it said John Macleod, tacksman of Hacklete had at least two sons one called Donald and one called Murdo. I will probably never find any proof, other than the letters from Mary Macleod that my 4X G. grandfather John Macleod was a brother of Donald of Lewis and son of John Macleod, tacksman of Hacklete.
Thank you very much for your offer of help Mcleod/Syme

try the hebridean connections web site. It should give you more than enough information about Hacklete and the island of Bernera.

I have just returned from Bernera and I was told that the website below would be useful http://www.uigandbernera.com/
It has a discussion area where you could ask questions and it also has a link to the museum which has a good local history section.
I hope this is of help to you.
