Is anyone researching the descendants of Henry Marsh (abt. 1782 - 1861) and Sarah Matilda Godfrey (abt. 1788 - 1866) of Bath, Somerset, and most specifically their son Capt. Henry Godfrey Marsh (b. 1811) who later resided in Winterbourne, Gloucestershire?

My 3xgreat grandparents were Augusta Louisa Susan Marsh and Charles Harward of Hayne House, Devon. Augusta's parents were Henry Marsh and Sarah Matilda Godfrey. I believe that Henry Marsh's sister Augusta Maria Marsh married John Race Godfrey 9 June 1817. John Race Godfrey's parents were John Godfrey and Sarah Earle Bulwer (whose brother was Bulwer-Lytton). Any info you may have on the family would be most interesting. In anticipation Mathoura, Australia

Hi Mathoura -
Sorry to delay in getting back to you; I've been away from home for a month in an area without easy internet access. This has put a crimp in my investigation of the Marsh family. I have begun trying to work out their tree in the hope that it might shed some light on a major mystery in my own family. I am interested in Henry Marsh's son, Henry Godfrey Marsh and his children.
In brief, the situation is as follows. My g grandmother [May Augusta Marshall] was born in Bristol in 1869. It was an illegitimate birth she and was adopted at an early age. I have pretty good reason to believe that her mother was Augusta Louisa B. Marsh, second daughter of Henry Godfrey Marsh and that her father was Augusta Louisa's brother-in-law, Dr. Edward Crossman Crossman was married to Henry Godfrey Marsh's first daughter, Veronica Mathilda Marsh.
Conclusive evidence of my g grandmother's ancestry will probably never be found, but I have been hoping that I might find Marsh descendants who are aware of any unfortunate family scandal that occurred in 1869.
So I'm not sure I can help you much. From your message I can see where the name Agusta came from; it seems to have a long history in the Marsh family.

Hi Erato I dont know if I can help you much with your search yet. I do know that Captain Henry Godfrey Marsh was married to a Josephine Marghuerite (German lady) and I found them with some of their children, including Augusta Louisa in the 1841 uk census.
I do have contact with a lady Vicki Herbert in New Zealand who has a lot of info on the Marsh family tree. She is descended from Octavious John Blake Marsh (one of my grt grt grandmother's brothers). I will make contact with her tomorrow and see if she can shed some light on your "family scandal" and then I will be in contact with you again.
You are right in thinking Augusta is prominent in the family, so is Louisa and I suspect your Augusta Louisa B is "B" for Bulwer.
Anyway, as soon as I hear back from Vicki I will let you know.

Actually, Augusta Louisa B. Marsh's third name was Babette [or, alternatively, Barbara]. I have discovered a good bit about the Marsh family and the Crossmans, as well. There were many interesting individuals in both families.
I just need to find a descendant who can confirm or convincingly refute the affair between A.L.B Marsh and Dr. Crossman and the subsequent birth of an illegitimate daughter.
I have communicated with Vickie Herbert and she filled in quite a few Marsh details for me, but she was unable to shed any further light on the situation of my g grandmother. She suggested making contact with a Crossman descendant and I have tried to do so repeatedly with no success; the messages are always returned as undeliverable.
I think that my g grandmother maintained contact with her mother and that she got some financial help from her. So, I had my brother [who was living in London at the time] request a will search for Augusta L.B. Marsh. They cashed my brother's check but he never recieved any information. When he called to enquire, they said the information had been sent but refused to tell him whether they had found a will or not. So that effort was a bust.
And so it goes ...
