How would I locate if someone was divorced between the 1901 census and 1909. Reason for asking is I received the copy of a will for a Thomas Dimmer, 4 out of 5 of his children, he lists his childrens names and either their wife or husband. On one instance his lists only his daughter and special 'trust' arrangements. On checking the census it appears that she already had 5 children in 1901.
In 1909, he just mentions Sarah (as listed below).
Is there a chance that she could have got divorced, or something could have happened to the family?
Kind regards
1901 Census – Sarah living at 235 Cornwell Road, Kensington with Charles Edwards, born in Ashwell, Herts, age 56, Housepainter children in the family were Charles W (age 6), Frances R (male age 15), Jennie (age 4), John C (age 11) Mary L (age 16) – all appear to be born in Willesden, Middx
1909 - Sarah Louisa Edwards of 17 Bevington Road, North Kensington, London

At www.findmypast.com (pay site) you can see an index for divorce and matrimonial causes up to 1903. There is a Sarah Louisa Edwards divorced in 1901, but her husband (the petitioner) was Henry Philip Edwards rather than Charles. The co-respondent was John(?) Pearson.

You can also search (free) the catalogue of the National Archives at www.nationalarchives.gov.uk. Divorce files are under reference J77.
The Sarah Louisa Edwards entry of 1901 is here, showing that the co-respondent was in fact Charles Pearson:

The Sarah Louisa who married Henry Philip Edwards was a Roberts at marriage, so may have nothing to do with your family.

Here's the correct marriage:
Sarah Louisa DIMMIER [sic - not DIMMER] Charles EDWARDS
Dec 1883 Kensington 1a 34
I haven't got time to go through all the J77 listings, but hope you find the answer

Thank you for your assistance.
I am probably doing something wrong here, but I have located the J77 at the National Archives on line, but can't find where I can input a name to search. I must be doing something silly here.

I find it easiest to start with this page:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp
and enter the relevant name(s) in the "word or phrase" box and J77 in the "Department or Series Code" box.
Hope that helps

Thank you, that is really interesting to know, I will look at it again for if there are other ancestors it might apply to.
However, there is nothing for Sarah. I wonder why her father didn't list her husband in his will and made a special trust arrangement for her, when he didn't do that for her other sisters.
Kind regards

Perhaps Charles was e.g. insolvent and so it was thought prudent to place Sarah's share of the estate in trust so that his creditors could not get to it? Or perhaps he had left Sarah?

Thanks, I wonder. It was Sarahs father that left the money in trust for her and an income of 16/- a month and money for her children.
I did find a death record for a Charles Edwards in 1911. He seems to have been quite a wealthy farmer in 1881, before moving to London. Perhaps they were separated.
I guess there is no real way of finding out.
Kind regards

Various avenues remain open:
You could search the London Gazette archives at: http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/home.aspx?geotype=London
to see whether Charles was ever bankrupt.
You might also want to think about finding Sarah's will, if any, to see if it sheds any light, and/or that of the Charles Edwards who died in 1911.
