They're in there somewhere....

Eleanor & Thomas Nowlans, 1841 onwards
« on: Tuesday 15 April 08 11:42 BST (UK) »

Help please!

I have a marriage dated 6 November 1840 at Gateshead Fell between Eleanor Gallon (formerly Elsdon) and Thomas Nowlans.

I know that Eleanor was born c. 1806 at Low Fortherly in the Parish of Bywell St. Peter, Northumberland.

I am quite unable to locate either of these two in the 1841  census or thereafter. Indeed, there seem to be very few people with this name.

Please, can anyone help me find them?

Hi Jennifer,

I can only assume they are mis-indexed somewhere, tried a couple of different websites without success.

there are two birth registrations in Stockton:
Dec 1848 Stockton 24 245 Nowlans  John Francis
Jun 1859  Stockton 10a   85 Nowlans    Isabel

but strangely I can't find either of them in the 1851/61 census

very odd  Undecided

Yes I saw that death too, but didn't find her in 1851 census, that death and the two births and the marriage were the only Nowlans entries on freebmd.

Strange - have tried under all variations I can think of.  I suppose they may have emigrated  Undecided

Hi

There is a John F. KOWLANS aged 2 born and living in Hartlepool in 1851.  He is indexed as KOWLANS, his parents Patrick born 1816 Ireland and Jane and other children are indexed as KNOWLAND

HO107/2384/505

This must be the one Barbara found.  Unfortunately the wrong family.  Suppose your NOWLANS could have been from Ireland and maybe returned there?!?

Thanks so much for your replies  - I've only just got back from holiday, hence the long delay in replying.

This one is a real puzzler, I have looked everywhere I can think of up to now, and, like you, am coming to the conclusion that they might have emigrated.

Many thanks for your help.
