Just noting the fact that I found a record for Thomas Froude in the national archives records, but interestingly he is listed as Fraude rather than Froude. However, it presumably is him because at the end it says that he married Elizabeth Collins of Stoke Gabriel. Not sure if this will work, but the link is :
http://www.a2a.org.uk/search/documentxsl.asp?com=1&i=0&nbKey=2&stylesheet=xsl\A2A_com.xsl&keyword=stoke%20gabriel&properties=0601
I didn't know this kind of material existed and I wonder why it was recorded and if this is the actual record or a partial extract.

Thanks again, Tricia. Tati, has effectively provided me with quite a lot of this information in previous posts.
In this respect, I wanted to mention that, regarding the invisibility" of the Froudes on the 1861 census, I found a Caleb in Torrington without a surname, but with seemingly the right age (16 years). Unfortunately, I can only see the "index" : I don't have access to the household. If this is Caleb Froude, I wonder if Martha might be there somewhere, i.e. somewhere in the census but also without a surname. If her parents were indeed Thomas Froude and Elizabeth Collins, then I think they both would have been deceased by this time (1853 and 1856, respectively), so one wonders what would have happened to Martha, given that she would one have been about 4 years old when her mother died and about 9 in 1861. However, I couldn't find any Martha's with that age.

Sorry, I don't get the same result on Ancestry. Findmypast has quite a few entries without surnames (or rather with 3 dots in the place of the surname), but Ancestry does not. Perhaps I'm barking up the wrong (family) tree.
I'm afraid I can't put a direct link to my search on findmypast, but in http://www.findmypast.com/CensusPersonStartSearchServlet?censusYear=1861 I just put first name Caleb, 16 years old, county Devon. However, there is no point in your looking at this.

I'm afraid I don't. But I wonder if the difference is simply because Findmypast has records for which they did not interpret the surname, whereas Ancestry doesn't?

As it happens, I was able to check the Caleb's about 16 years old in Devon on the 1861 census on Ancestry and Findmypast. Out of 7 entries, 3 of the transcriptions of the surnames in Findmypast appeared to incorrect and the Caleb Littlejohns present on Ancestry was not present on Findmypast. I wonder if the latter corresponds to the Caleb without a surname on Findmypast : I cannot be sure.

Thanks very much for the information. I was able to access the newspaper you mention. Isn't it amazing what you can find on the Internet. I'm not aware of any such connection as yet. So far I only have a few Froude's in my tree, but there is no sign of any such "aristocratic" element on this side so far.

Hi,
I have located Caleb in Torrington. He is not the person you are after. He is Caleb SLEE a servant aged 14 b Langtree - a loader. The entry is quite legible.

Thank you very much. I can only say that, based on a very small sample size, it appears as though Findmypast has quite a few entries which are either incorrectly or partially transcribed, even though the original entry seems reasonably clear. I have seen some incorrectly transcribed entries on Ancestry, but only in cases where the entry was effectively very difficult to decipher. However, my experience is very limited. I wonder if there are any other posts on this topic.
By the way, I really like your image with the turning pages! That's amazing.
Best wishes,
Alan
