« on: Sunday 13 April 08 10:28 BST (UK) »

hi
can any one surgest where i could find an old map of south stoneham  for around 1881,
as i said on an earlier message
i have a charles webber living at
amberley villa
south stoneham , hampshire
the problem is when i looked at all the houses on the 1881 census where amberley villa was there is no street name it looks like all the houses were given names. so i have no idea where all these houses were,
any help would be appreciated
thank you
patricia.

If you have access to Ancestry and find the page showing Charles WEBBER. Click on 'South Stoneham' at the top of the page, just before  Disrict 8.  You will then get a page with a list of the districts. Click on 'View description of enumeration district' for district 8.  It tells you the roads and areas covered.

It covers Portswood to St Denys and Bevois Hill.  It looks as these were all large house with fairly wealthy occupants.

You may also find the name of the road by looking in the 1891 or 1901 census.  Even if Charles wasn't there in later years his neighbours might be.

Looking at the 1891 census Amberley Villa was in Spring Road, Portswood.

Spring Road was later renamed Spring Cresent and is a continuation of Avenue Road beyond Portswood Road.

Many houses in this area are now divided into flats for student accommodation.

I doubt if there are any old photos (other than family ones) of a residential area like that.

No. I can't find any either.  Tried Francis Frith and Hampshire Record Office - nothing obvious.
