Hi Pughy

best bet is to get the marriage cert to see who his father was, or have you already got that Smiley

Hi Pughy

When you get it you can let us know who the father is, then we can have another look.

Hi Pughy and Ricky

I had a look as well - the only one I could find on the 1871 is

John Landrum 52 labourer born Ireland
Elizabeth        40 wife born Ireland
William            15 plasterer born Ireland ??
Mary                8 scholar born Lancashire North Meols

Living in 'Little Ireland' municipal borough of Southport
Reference RG10 3873
Transcribed as Landrim but looks like it could be Landrum on the page .

Thought you might like to have a look to see what you think

Hi again
It's a possibility as the occupations on other census records are similar.
William says he was born in Ireland on the 1871. If this was true then maybe that's why they're not on the 1861?
Mary seems to have been born here so  her birth/baptism records  should give Elizabeth's maiden name.
Trying to trace them in Ireland is more difficult as the earliest surviving census is 1901. Unfortunately all previous census records were destroyed in a fire. The 1901 and 1911 have been released and the 1911 is currently being put on line and will be free to search.
Also civil registration for births marriages and deaths began in 1864(except for Church of Ireland marriages which started from 1845) so you couldn't apply for a certificate (unless it was a C of I marriage ) and therefore have to rely on church records.
Then you have to know which parish.

There was also a registration of land called Griffiths Valuation taken from 1848-1864 where owners and lessors had to register their land. If you have access to Ancestry this is now available to search - if not just google Griffiths Valuation.
Even if you don't find your relative you can sometimes get an idea of which parishes the different surnames were in. At least you know it was County Mayo.
You can try writing to the parish priest to see if he can find the records or maybe see if you can hire the film of the parish records through you  nearest LDS.
I hope this doesn't sound too complicated!!

Good Luck

Neptune
