I was able to access the great site at the start, but now it seems my access has been blocked. Cry I have tried both Firefox and Internet Explorer to no luck, it just doesn't load.

Well, I just got in no problem...but I'm like the dog who unexpectedly caught the car he was chasing...I don't know what to do with it. Where should I start?

Cheers,

I had this problem at one point - can't remember properly but I think the link that Gale suggested I bookmark wasn't working.  Try logging in again from the invite page

http://access.gale.com/gdctrial/login.html   this is the link I've bookmarked & it works fine for me thru Firefox

Thank you for your help, Barbara. However, that link doesn't appear to work for me either. Sad I will bookmark it though and hopefully I'll be able to access it soon.

Thanks again, Smiley

I just registered and it accepted me and I got in using IE. It looks fascinating so I've added it to my favourites.

I also had trouble getting into the database for a while but managed by going into 'history' then clicking on 'access.gale' and then double click on 'Gale-Instant Trial...' and signing in that way.

I have found an article in The Times dated Wednesday 28th December 1864. It is a letter to the editor from Edward Sayell of Mentmore, Bucks. In the letter Edward Sayell refers to a' report in the paper dated 22nd Dec of a trail of Joseph Baker (incorrectly described as Baber)'

I cannot find this report can someone please look for me, afraid I'm not too cleaver at finding my way around this site?

Thanks

Carol

Hi ruskie
When I initially registered, from the invitation page - I was immediately admitted.
did you get an email back from them after you registered?
I just did, which gave me the login and password (i imagine to use later when I return to the database on a new session)

Try virtual as the login

cheers

They gave me the login 'virtual' and  the password 'books' (duh!  Grin Grin) which I suspect is the same for everyone - then you just have to enter your email addy when you sign in

I ended up signing up again, and yes, those are the login and password words. Odd thing is though, I actually put my own password in, and it still worked  Shocked

Mentmore

If you search for Joseph Baber on the 22 December 1864, you will get sent to page 11.

The item begins:

Joseph Baber was indicted for willfully setting fire to a stack of wheat, the property of James Roads, at Mentmore, on the 18th of September.

The article goes on at some length and ends:

The case was not finished at the time of despatching our parcel.

A search for Joseph Baker gives a hit on the 23 December 1864, page 10.

This gives the conclusion to the trial:

.............Not guilty.

If you still cannot get these two items, I can copy them and send them to you by e-mail. The files can be viewed using the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer Program.
