John Thompson Goes South
« on: Monday 14 April 08 01:13 BST (UK) »

I am looking for info on this little known member of my family. He was the eldest child of John and Amanda Thompson, born in West Hartlepool, Durham in 1880. Sometime after the turn of the century he decided to move to South Africa and make his mark. Apparently he did so spectacularly and gave his younger sister Florence a fair amount of money. He did not marry but may have had a child. His death in the 1950's was, according to family rumour a mystery.
Can anyone help flesh (or flush) him out.

Hi Scott

There is only one John Thompson listed in the National Archives (in Pietermatitzburg) during that period - but this one has a wife.  Are you absolutely sure he never married?  This is the reference:

DEPOT     NAB
SOURCE    MSCE
REFERENCE 1142/1953
DESCRIPTION          THOMPSON, JOHN. BORN IN ENGLAND. S/SP THOMPSON, MARTHA MARY. BORN THOMPSON. DECEASED ESTATE.
STARTING  19530000
ENDING    19640000
REMARKS   ESTATE PAPERS 1343/1953 JOHN THOMPSON ENCLOSED.

It took a long time to wind up this estate based on the starting and ending dates and looks like it was only closed after his wife dies in the Transvaal in 1963.

There is another reference in the Transvaal Archive for a Mary Thompson who dies in 1954 whose pre-deceased husband is John Thompson and then there is the one referred to in the above reference who dies in 1963.

Another interesting reference is:
DEPOT     KAB
SOURCE    CSC
VOLUME_NO 1/2/1/307
REFERENCE 34
DESCRIPTION          RECORD OF PROCEEDINGS OF CRIMINAL CASE. FIRST WESTERN CIRCUIT COURT, GEORGE. REGINA VERSUS JOHN THOMPSON. ASSAULT WITH INTENT TO MURDER AND CONTRAVENING SECTION 4(1) OF ACT 28 OF 1937.
STARTING  19520000
ENDING    19520000

But I guess there must have been more than one John Thompson around in the 1950's and this is in the George area.

It is cheap enough to get copies of the files and I would suggest that you order copies of at least the Death Notice contained in the Estate File just to make sure.  To order docs see one of the sticky topics at the top of this board.

Regards

Thank you very much for that.
I am not 100% sure if he was married or not but it would come as a surprise to many in the family.
Once again, thank you.
