NSW Certificates
« on: Tuesday 15 April 08 22:30 BST (UK) »

I'm hoping the moderators will allow this as I've no other way really of checking out the current situation. Grin

I ordered 5 certificates online from NSW on 8 March.  At the time it stated that there was a 3 week delay and since previously it always said 10 working days I didn't think much of it.  That was over 5 weeks ago, the other week it said 6 weeks delay now its says 7.

My question is, is anybody else still waiting for NSW certificates from the beginning of March or have you received them please??  I'd like to know the situation prior to firing off an email at the weekend when the 6 week anniversary arrives.  I appreciate this is a bit off topic but it would be very useful to know.  In future I think I will use the agent service that I have since been advised of.

Thanks

Nicola

Hi Nicola

I am not currently waiting on certificates from NSW but in Dec/ Jan I waited  4 weeks (it took in the holiday period)

It has amazed me that I could have certificates arrive QUICKER and CHEAPER from the UK which included check points to avoid paying for a wrong certificate.

I would make contact about them, especially if at the time of ordering it stated a three week wait.
Like you, I will be trying the transcription service if I need any more NSW certificates in future.

Good Luck

Yes, I have been waiting more than 6 weeks. I rang them a few weeks ago to find out what was going on. Apparently there was a complete computer system failure which had to be fixed. I received one cert a week ago, it took 7 weeks to get here. Still waiting for more. They also mentioned something about certificates being printed on plain paper now, without the watermark etc, although the last one I received had the background.

Hope this helps

Hello  there

It  is  a  lot easier  and  a  lot quicker to  use a Transcription  Agent  and of  course simply cheaper.

If  you  are  not wanting a cetified copy  but  just certificates for Genealogy they are the way  to go.

I  personally  use Laurie Turtle

Laurie  sends the certificates  by  email  if you  so  wish  so very quick.
http://home.iprimus.com.au/lturtle/

the NSW BDM website has  this information  readily available

Sounds like a new computer system went slightly wrong!  Like Jenn, I always buy transcriptions, quick and easy by email.

I didn't know about the transcription service. Sounds good and much cheaper, I will be trying it out next time.
Thanks for that advice

I have always had to wait at least 3-4 weeks for certificates from NSW BDM, so I don't know if they are just making excuses, or not.  It takes 3 days if you order certs from Victorian BDM, but you get a copy of the entire page on which your entry lies.
I also didn't know about transcription services, and will now be using them. Thanks for the advice!!

Do you know that it is cheaper to purchase and download certs from the Vic bdm site and only costs $17.50 and it's instant Grin Grin

Yes, transcription services are a great service. Cheaper and takes the pain out of trying to decipher the old handwriting, however, just be a little careful with transcriptions, that in fact the certificate has been transcribed correctly. I've used them (3 transcribers in NSW) for over 10 years, and would estimate well over 100 (closer to 200?) transcriptions. I've only queried a couple, and sometimes a transcription error was found, but only sometimes. So, if you think something doesn't seem correct, always get back to the transcriber for confirmation, and they should re-verify any query, whether with an apology, or confirmation of the transcription.

I use Marbract services and that only cost A$15- for a full certificate.
It would cost extra for postage if you wanted it sent to you but just as easy to have them email you the transcription.
They also match with anyone else who might be researching that same family.  I found a cousin that way.

I've found a few errors too Les, but no issues (or charge) the couple of times I've asked for a check. Usually only happens if I am expecting one thing & get something slightly different. Usually the transcript indicates if there is trouble with any words.

I started using transcripts purely for the price, but finding it so much quicker has been a bonus  Grin Wish Qld would do the same - or send their certificates back to the archives!

Thanks to Rob, Chris, Jenn, Trish, Cando and Margaret for their responses (think thats everyone).  I'm still awaiting email confirmation that they've been despatched (and then probably a week on top for them to arrive in the UK) but we'll wait and see - just gone past 6 weeks.

As Trish say's, must have been a big computer crash to cause such a backlog.  I've normally had to wait about 3.5 weeks for them to arrive from NSW.  I will be using the transcription service next time, particularly for deaths, since usually I'm really only after parent's confirmation and any children's names.

I just wish others would provide a service like Victoria, so much easier to download them immediately!!  Mind you I can get carried away and spend too much money if I'm not paying attention.  Been using them for a while now.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions/comments.

I think we all agree with this - I love ScotlandsPeople - but even though it is really inexpensive to load down their information, I spend more there than anywhere else - because it is so easy.

I do hope those certificates arrive shortly. It seems such a long time & the postage from here to there is only 4-5 days. I usually receive English certificates in less than 2 weeks.

Certificates ordered seven [7] weeks ago turned up today 28/4/08. They blame the delay on the TV program "Who do you think you are" for creating an unusual interest in genealogy.

Hi
I have just received my certificate ordered on 3 March.
Seems ridiculous to me. If certs are so popular now, then perhaps they should employ extra people to process them. It is not a cheap service, and I am sure they would make more money if  faster service was provided
