I usually get transcriptions but in this case we wanted certified copies. Transcriptions are faster and cheaper with the added benefit that the transcriber is used to deciphering the often near impossible writing on the old stuff. Try Laurie Turtle. Jim

Hi,
I have just used a NSW Transcription agent to get 3 marriage certs. from New Zealand.
I paid for them 26th March and waited patiently for 3 weeks before ringing to check up on them. My first enquiry went unanswered after 2 days-the receptionist had said they would get back to me, rang again and was phoned next day( in the 2 hours said I wouldn't be home) and they left a message. I rang back today, no reply, rang again, message bank only.
To put it mildly I am very ........ off.
It took nearly 5 weeks for them to leave me a message saying that you need an area the marriage took place in now, plus folio no. to apply for certs.
I am a very patient person and realise there have been lots of Public holidays in the last few weeks, but a simple local phone call is not much to ask for is it??
Trish

Transcription agents all rely on you to supply the details which are readily accessible on BDM in all states. Every one I have dealt with clearly states that on their web site. It only takes a short time to search these details and you pay a lot less than going through BDM.

Hi Jim,
Sorry if my posting was a little confusing. I had given the Agent year and folio numbers for the certs. This is all that I was informed was necessary for N.Z. certs. These had been found for me by other researchers. NZ certs are NOT searchable on-line and and are only searchable on micro-fiche.
What I was complaining about is the lack of response I received from the transcription agent ( not your favourite Laurie, another one).
As I do not have a credit card used the Agent and paid double the price I could have got them from with one.
All the best, Trish
Thank you also Nicola for explaining what Ihad been informed of also. But I rang N.Z BMD and they said you have to provide the area also- and it is a new requirement. You can provide 3 areas to search- I am really confused with all of this and will try to ring the agent again tomorrow.

Hi Nicola,
I have posted on the N.Z. board re this and after I have spoken to the Agent today I will let you know what I found out. I am lucky as I have an idea of the area involved.
Regards, Trsh

I find it essential to provide Registration Number; Year; and Name of Child/deceased, etc. as this makes it unique when searched. I once put an incorrect registration number on a request and as that did not tally with the person I had named the agent immediately knew there was an error and did not proceed further until he contacted me and found that I had reversed two numbers. If he had not done so I would have been stuck with a certificate I didn't want and still have to pay for it as well as the correct one. Genealogy is expensive enough without throwing money away. Jim

Hi Jim
That would be the norm, you can't generally order certificates from UK or Australia without providing such details since the online forms request it. although Victoria's form only asks for a year and reference but then confirms the details with you before you pay.
Perhaps my originally posting was a little unclear, my comment about area is that with the reference, and associated name and year, they should really be able to find the correct certificate otherwise why have NZ BMD released microfiche with only such information included, no area?? I wouldn't normally put in an order without a name and year and references; you generally are expected to pay them to search the indexes for you if one or more of those details is missing on top of the price of a certificate. The UK index references include a location but thats because of the existence of local register offices, I'm assuming in the case of NZ that while local offices may exist the registrations have always been indexed nationally?? I don't know for certain but suspect this could be the case, hence no area references are provided.
Trish - thanks I'd be interested to know the outcome of this.
Nicola

Hi NIcola,
I spoke to the Transcription Agent late yesterday afternoon. I must take back some of what I said as he was very nice and helpful. He had checked my names, year and folio number refs. out on microfiche, and yes as all the details I provided were correct.
He is going to ring N.Z. BMD today to see what is going on , as he has never been told before that you had to provide an area in regard to a marriage, before when getting certs. in the past.
I will post whn I get a reply from him sometime today. Luckily I have a day off!!!
Regards, Trish
I checked Varcoes Marriage index out on- line and for the years I want certs. 1873 and 1888, there are not a lot of marriages at all 600 and 3000 odd.

... just me again ....
singing the praises of the transcription service offered by Laurie Turtle.
I telephoned my order (from NZ) on Wednesday last .... the "results" arrived in my inbox, a mere 24 hours later ! Superb service !
Lu
(Of course, being armed with new information, generates loads more questions .... and I'll be back on this board "to hound you all" .... shortly !)

Laurie is good value. I have put several frustrated researchers in touch with him all with satisfied results.
