I recently visited the archives in Sheffield to do some family research prior to the 1800's The earliest relative I knew of was Thomas Durham married to Martha but not sure of surname. In the records I found that Thomas was christened in 1793 and was the son of Jonathan and Hanna Durham but I could not find where they came from or if they married in Sheffield etc can anyone help with further research
Regards Paul

Paul, Welcome to rootschat. Lucky you visiting the Archives... When you say 'in the records" which records do you mean exactly?
The way I'd come at this is to look for the marriage Jonathan DURHAM and Hannah whoever...but it's hard to know what you have looked at when you say you couldn't find where they came from etc. The babyThomas may have been baptised at their local parish church but that church may not have been one that could conduct marriages- so you'll have to find out which church nearby may have conducted their marriage- assuming they lived in the area where the child was baptised. S So tell us more and maybe we can make suggestions and maybe others will have a better way of tackling this than I have suggested.

Charlotte Apologies for not being too clear the christening record for Thomas was in the cathedral of St Peter and St Paul and was quite vague it just gave a short sentence to say that Thomas was the son of Jonathen and Hannah and was christened in 1793. I then searched all Sheffield churches and marriages in them from 1780- 1793 and could not find a mention of any wedding between Jonathen and Hannah. I guess what I'm asking is where should I go next?
Thanks for Getting back to me Paul

Paul, Have you searched the IGI online to see if they have Jon and Hannah's marriage? You can assume it was in 1793 or maybe years earlier . You can also search for Thomas baptism even tho you have it and maybe that will lead you to siblings at the same church or elswhere maybe nearby.
Do you know about the IGI? Put "IGI" into google then search.
Get back to me if I can give you more info- don't want to state the obvious if you already have done this.
Do please let me kknow how you go with this and I'll try to help-

Charlotte Thanks for the advice on the marriage for Jonathan and Hannah I went to the IGI as you said and the only marriage that was anywhere close was the marriage of Ann Jarvis and Johnathen Durham in Rotherham. I also found a son also christened in Sheffield called Jonathan and a marriage for Thomas to Martha Bell the other son who was one of my fore fathers. Feeling adveturous I found a death record for Jonathan Sr in 1826 and found he was 71 at death. Mathematics gave me the birth year and I found he was probably from Whitehaven, Northumberland as this was the only Jonathan durham born around that time according to the IGI. I now have his parents names and a little more research to do.
I really appreciate all your help and advice and will now plan another trip to the frozen north in a few weeks to check all the other info that I find out from the IGI
Best Wishes Paul

Hi Paul, there is a site called something like "batch numbers in IGI" - that in google should produce it... and it gives lists of the records available online for various churches, by district. Yyou can go to the churches records and insert aa surname and it will search etc for you. Not well explianed by the site is straightforward. This may be helpful until you get to go north into the arctic of England-hope no one from the notrrth is reading this... Let us know how you get on, charlotte

cough cough i am from up north from yorkshire near sheffield lol ps unless you ment further north like durham then your forgiven lol lol Carolanne, of course I didn't mean to sling off at YKS- England's most wonderful county to which I am addicted- even tho my grandfather caught a cough in Feb 1902 which turned to pneumonia and next thing, he was in Scholemoor Cem, Bradford by the end of the month! So rug up warm if you really do have a cough and enjoy wonderful Yks. Lucky you.
Paul, great news about the batch numbers giving you info.. it helps restrict the search to where people may be. Looking everywhere as a starting point is a bit daunting.
keep us posted about your progress.

Carolanne, I knew you didn't take it wrongly... but it was bit of fun to react when I thought about Yks and the cold there. Fancy snow this morning and it's April. The daffies should be out and smiling by now? Keep rugged up and warm- and don't get pneumonia!
