Hi Sandra  Smiley

This gives a list of the  churches on Ovenden:

I assume that it would be St Georges

Saint Mary the Virgin at Illingworth would be another possibility.

St. /georges might be a probability.
Is Pellon separate from Ovenden then please?
All my family lived in that area until about 50 years ago.
Yet the earlier family were born Ovenden>

As Malcolm says there is the parish church at Illingworth, St Mary's and there are just heaps of Ovenden people who are listed in the baptism and burial records of that church.

Maybe the IGI has their stuff, and the LDS certainly has a film that can be ordered showing these records. I used this film  to find my lot who lived in Ovenden.

Sandra, I'm pretty sure that the LDS film for St Mary's Illingworth  covers the 1815 period and quite some years on either side of that date.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Sandra, Look in your phone book for Church of the Latter Day Saints to find the entries for the Mormons who run the family history centres which are usually located at or near their church- the FH centres usually are listed under the main entry for LDS. If you phone the centree nearest to you they'll tell you when they are open- go there and ask them how to order the film or microfiche for Ovenden etc.  They'll look it us on their list, give you the details to enter on the order form then you pay them a small sum- depends where you live but it is about 3GBP or 6 AUS Dollars-[That may be out of date info as its a while since I've ordered] When it arrives they notify you by post or by email and you have a month's use of the film.   They don't let you take it home- you must  view it at their centre and their opening hours usually cover some time on sat and some time in the early evening for those who work in the day.
All the help they give you is free- they are most kind and obliging and the use of the film and fiche readers is free- you may need to book a reader when notified the film has arrived.

Re Ovenden films- I had a ball with them and found some wonderful stuff about my HARGREAVES family.

Glad to answer anything further I can especially for another  Ovenden  seeker.

Hi Charlotte,

thanks for the info.  Would they do you suppose, order
them from my library on the microfische I wonder.
Cardiff is our nearest branch and  don't have acar and
know that the LDS is difficult to get to.

Sandra,
I've never asked them as I live within striking distance of an LDS FHC.  Why not phone the nearest LDS FHC to you and ask if they can help you.  You may be wise to ask to speak to the person in charge as many who help in the FHCs are volumteer and may not have the know-how or authority to deal with your request.

Another way that might work is to ask you local library about getting the film from the LDS.  That might be a better place to start.  If they have never done that then and are hesitant to try it, then  try the LDS.

What is the name of the person whom you are seeking?

keep us posted about what happens.

Thanks for suggestions all of which I wil try.  My g g g grandfather Joseph Cockroft b 1815 Ovenden married
Betty .  I am looking for his parents.  Most suggestions seems to be Illingworth and strangely enough my grandmother went to live there in her later years after
living n Halifax, so suspect that she was familiar with the area because her ancestors came from there.
