George HARVEY marr'd Jemima COMBE Sep qtr 1848
« on: Wednesday 16 April 08 06:44 BST (UK) »

I have found this couple in Cheltenham 1851 census - page 28. At that stage they have two children Alfred aged 2 and Charles 3mths. I have also found out that Alfred's middle name was possibly Beckett (his maternal grandmother's maiden name).

I found a Jemima Mary Harvey born Cheltenham in March qtr 1853 in free BDM. She might be theirs too.

Does anyone have them possibly in Cheltenham 1861 Census? By the time of the 1881 census I cannot find any of them, so I think Jemima may have died.

George Harvey was a Baker by trade and I think it is him as a lodger in Bilston Stafford in the 1881 census. It lists him as Married but there is no sign of Jemima.
Thanks
Linda

There is a George HARVEY b about 1828 Cheltenham a Baker in the 1861 Census at Wolverhampton
RG9/1995 Folio 73 P 29 together with  wife Mary Ann and 2 children Edward and Elizabeth.

Also from FreeBMD there is a death of Jemima Mary HARVEY Dec Quarter 1856 also Wolverhampton.

This could be your man, don't know where his children with Jemima are though!

Hope this is of some help

Thanks Robert. That does sound like the same man. It opens up new mysteries as you say.
Did the 1861 say the ages of Edward and Elizabeth and where they were born please?
I can't tell if the Jemima who died was the daughter or the mother.
Anyway, at least I know to keep a look out for Wolverhampton when searching for this family.
Thanks heaps again,
Linda

Thanks Valda,
I have turned my attention to the two sons of George and Jemima Harvey who were on the 1851 census for Cheltenham:
Alfred born Sep qtr 1849
Charles born Mar qtr 1851

I think I have found their names only in the 1861 census for Stroud. Would someone please be able to look up the Household they are living in in Stroud Gloucestershire now that their mother is dead (almost certainly) and their father has remarried and is living in Wolverhampton?
It may be the Stokes family - Emma Rebecca Stokes was a Combe cousin of theirs.
Thank you, Linda

The only Charles Harvey I can see in Stroud in 1861, on the census index I have access to, was born there circa 1856 and was living with his parents. No Harveys in Stroud born Cheltenham. No Alfred Harveys.

What evidence do you have that either boy survived childhood.

Births Mar 1851
Harvey  Charles Edward     Cheltenham  11 217
Deaths Sep 1852
Harvey  Charles Edward     Cheltenham  6a 246

The other Charles Harvey birth registered in 1851 in Cheltenham was in the December quarter so after the 1851 census was taken. He is with his mother on the 1861 census and is the only Charles Harvey born Cheltenham on later censuses.

I did not realise Horsley was in Stroud District or would have realised earlier these are not my Harveys. Sorry!

Thanks for info re Charles Edward's death as an infant.

I wonder what happened to Alfred Beckett (as his middle name almost certainly was after his maternal grandmother's maiden name) Harvey?Huh

Thank you again for your help,

Regards,
