Both the IGI and familyhistory online have the marriage of Thomas Newton to Sarah NELSON  on 2nd Feb 1834. I've finally had a look at the image and I'm sure it says Sarah WILSON

What do you think  Huh

So has the witness!    Except I don't think anyone has signed as these appear to be  copies.  Bishop's Transcripts?    Maybe you ought to try to see the original - if it exists.

Hi Sylvia

Definitely a beautiful Wilson and as Andrea said the witness was an Ann Wilson.

The second witness' name is most interesting - looks like Peter Wardzopper.

The wonders of science!

Grin That's what I thought...should I notify someone...it seems a bit strange that even familyhistoryonline got it wrong. I thought their records were from the local society.

As I added to my post if these are BTs then the original may say Nelson.  I had one marriage where the bride was from Chester le Street on the original but it was copied as Houghton le Spring on the BT.   Took me ages before I thought to look at the original.  You should be ale to get the original film at your nearest LDS centre - listed on www.familysearch.org

I agree the entry is written by the same hand so could be a mistranscription along the way. Huh

Sorry Andrea
LDS isn't an option I can use easily...too far away.
The originals must exist I think if Northumberland FHS have supplied them

I agree with Andrea that this is most likely a mis-transcription by the Priest or whoever had to copy out a years BMD's for submission to the Diocese. I expect his mind was wandering.... Grin

I too have seen other mis-transcriptions on the BT's.

I would be inclined to go with the IGI and Family History Online, I have always found the latter to be excellent.

Alternatively start a new topic and ask if anyone on rootschat has access to the original parish records, expaining why you need an original look-up rather than the BT's.

There are several Sarah Wilson candidates in the Newcastle area, so she would be hard to pin down I think
Thanks for your help ladies

You could always e-mail the County Record Office and ask them to check the Parish Register for you. You have the exact date of the marriage, so it would not entail a time consuming search on their part, so any cost should be minimal.

Marriages of the era for the Parish of St John's, Newcastle are indexed on GenUKI site.

The index shows marriage 2 Feb 1834 between Thomas Newton and sarah Nelson.

The transcriptions were done by George Bell ( now deceased) from original parish records. He did many many transcriptions of Northumberland and Co Durham parish records... a legend !

But mistakes still possible ?
