** LMA VISITS UPDATE 10.5.08. **
« on: Wednesday 16 April 08 09:45 BST (UK) »

Hi Rootschatters

As a lot of you are aware, I have been visiting the London Metropolitan Archives and on alternate weeks the Westminster City Archives.

My tally so far is
7th April 26 look-ups
14th April  32
25th April 11
29th April 15
9th May 10

Most of the older look-ups that I still have to do, need a time-consuming search as specific dates have not been given or they are look-ups in institution records, many of which have not been microfilmed. These institution look-ups involve a 20 minute wait while the books are ordered for the reading room. Many are not indexed and searching through them day by day, month by month, year by year again is time consuming. Then there is the task of transcribing. I would say on average this type of look-up takes at least half an hour once the books get to the reading room, then there's the disappointment of not finding what you are looking for and having to start all over again.

Added to this I only have time available between 10.30am and 2.30pm as I have to do the school-run.

I will be at the Westminster Archives most probably 13th May, then back at the LMA w/c 2nd June. I won't be doing any look-ups w/c 19th May as I have other commitments or w/c 26th May as it's half term.

Please be assured that if I have acknowledged your look-up, it will get done. Some of you may appear to be luckier than others and your look-ups are being answered promptly, this is most probably due to more information or specific dates being available to me in your requests.

If you do have an unanswered look-up request and I have not contacted you, please send me a pm with the thread URL found at the top of your screen or reply to your thread with the word 'Bump' so it moves to the top of the list.
