Regarding the maiden name of James’ wife...the surest way to find out is to obtain the birth certificate for one of the children.

I have had difficulty finding a marriage but I think that this may be a partial answer... (although it could be a complete red herring)

1851 Richmond AMJ quarter 24 603

James Scarr

He is listed on FreeBMD on his own at Richmond Surrey. Looking at the original index entry (which is very indistinct) I think it says Richmond Yk.

At that same reference are two brides called Elizabeth...

Elizabeth King or Elizabeth Coltman

On the 1851 census, there is an Elizabeth King aged 19 born and living in Middleton Tyas. I cannot see an Elizabeth Coltman who fits.

It might be her...but I cannot (at the moment) see any connection with the names Metcalfe or Foster.

Very circumstantial, but I think we may be onto something in a round about way...

George King born Middleton Tyas 1828 (who looks like Elizabeth’s brother from the 1841 census) has a son on the 1861 census called James Metcalfe King.

I have to go now for a while but maybe someone else can find more evidence.

I am now fairly sure that it is Elizabeth King’s brother since their father Robert is living with George in 1871. I am also fairly sure that he did not marry an Elizabeth Metcalfe (I think he married Elizabeth Aungiers) and so there must be some other reason for using the middle name of Metcalfe for one of his sons.

According to the IGI Batch C040491 Henrietta Metcalfe, Daughter of George and Elizabeth Metcalfe, was christened on 1st February 1790 at Hipswell.

On a user submitted entry of the IGI Henrietta Metcalfe (born 1790 Hipswell) married Robert King on 26th November 1825 at Hipswell.

Therefore, I think (almost) for certain that James Scarr married Elizabeth King and her mother was Henrietta Metcalfe.

Dear Ds

Thank you for the record.
Seems that his first wife died 17 Oct 1931.
Are there any children registered from this marriage?

Cheers

Hi

Have you missed a couple of pages which follow the note about Joseph and Laura's marriage (at the bottom of page 1) ?

Laura was 70 years of age when she married Joseph. It seems highly unlikely that they would have had any children.

Hi
Many thanks for the mammoth  records that has filled up my family tree of Scarr and Pounder.
Great to sort out the Metcalfe and Foster connections. Very impressed.

May I ask another little favour of marriage record of John Foster Scarr to Ann unknown?Any census records available from them?

Any other children other than Jane and William?
Other census records after 1841 of John And Elizabeth Scarr nee Pounder please?

Cheers

Possible Marriage Registration

1877 Darlington JFM quarter 10a 43

Ann Heavisides
John Scarr

On the 1891 census (Darlington RG12/4040 Folio 38 Page 28) Ann is a widow living with her parents. She has four more children with her...Edward 10, Elizabeth 6, Henrietta 4 and Edith 4mo.

Looks like John’s death is registered in OND quarter of 1890 in Darlington.

Me again

Thank you for that. Good to know the sites to search, more of a challenge when you know how.

Are there records held as late as 1900's for BDM?

Looking for children and partners for Walter and Catherine Scarr nee Degney/Degnan m.1904 Darlington?

Hi Velcro,

There are several possible birth entries on the free bmd that could be your Jane, 2 possibles for Thomas and 2 for John.

However I would go for this one as it looks to be the most reliable.

ROBERT WILLIAM NICHSOLSON  March q. 1867 9c - 506  ROTHERHAM

If you go to the free bmd link I gave... select Information.. then clik on Statistics and then Coverage Charts and it will tell you what years have been transcribed and by what percentage. But this is only approximate but it is very helpful to know .
