Can someone please let me have the details for Benjamin HODGES, born about 1817-1819 probably in Somerset?
He is likely to be in Southampton in the 1851 Census, with his wife Sarah and sons Benjamin (born about 1846) and John (born about 1848).
Any information would be most welcome.
Thanks in anticipation.

Many thanks for this, Suz.
I was hoping that the entry might give a parish in Somerset, but no such luck!
He died abroad in 1857, and so Sarah is shown as a widow by the time of the 1861 Census, still in St Michael's Parish Southampton.
Thanks a lot for doing this lookup for me.

I think this opens up some very interesting possibilities. I especially like the occupation (Baker), as other members of the HODGES clan were shoemakers or farmers.
It certainly looks as if Benjamin may have been married previously. I think his 1851 wife was perhaps Sarah Pitman, and that they married in Southampton in 1845. This would fit with the birth of a son Benjamin in 1846 in Southampton.
Thanks a lot for this additional lookup.
Kind regards

Thank you very much Suz.
I was doing this research for someone else, and I have passed on all the information you found, along with what I discovered in the 1861 Census.
I am not actually related to this family, so it's basically up to the other researcher to get a birth certificate for one of the children, and then the relevant marriage certificate for the parents. This should give the chance to get back a further generation and to continue the research in Somerset.
Thanks so much for all the time and trouble you have bestowed on this inquiry for me; it is much appreciated.
Kind regards
Philip
