Stroud and Wotton Under Edge
« on: Wednesday 16 April 08 13:12 BST (UK) »

I am having a short trip to Gloucestershire in a few days.  My interest is in Stroud and Wotton Under Edge and I am wondering where I can most usefully spend research time.   I know that there is a lot of material in the Gloucestershire archives but really want to see Wotton Under Edge and Stroud.

Does anybody have any advice please on the best places to go for information.

Thanks,

Elin

Hi

Go to Stroud library and also the library in Wotton where they have a small but useful heritage centre.

Hi Elin

It depends what sort of information you are after. Stroud library is good on local books and has quite a good set of maps plus (some) microfiche of parish records for the surrounding area. If you want parish records and things you're probably better going to the record office, although if you post which parishes you're interested in, I can tell you whether Stroud Library has them.

I can't comment on how good the heritage centre is,  having never used it, but if you're not familiar with Stroud or Wotton, they are both well worth a visit in themselves. You might have to make more than one visit - one or more for records research and one to get a feel of the area  Grin

It's a great place to live - I love it!

Hi Angela,

Thanks for your reply.  I'm a bit muddle headed about what I want to look for really because I have so many ancestors from Stroud & WUE.  It's all quite new to me because I was unaware that a branch of my mothers family were from that area.   I need to get myself organised sharpish! Roll Eyes

On the census they are just down as being in Stroud Parish.  Quite a few of them appear to have been buried in St Lawrence Cemetery and I have been trying to get  the numbers of the plots where they are buried.  Plus one has an obelisk that was put up to him in Stroud Cemetery.   I got the GFHS  burial index and one with plans of burial grounds on cd rom but it doesn't include them.  I am also trying to find further burial records.

In Wotton Under Edge I am particularly trying to find info on my 4 x great grandma who probably ended her days in Perrys Almshouse.

I have been reading up quite a lot on Stroud and WUE and agree with you that they both look great places and I can't wait! Cheesy

Best wishes,

Elin

Hi Elin

Well, Stroud library has the microfiche for St Lawrence parish records, but the plot numbers tend to be in a separate book, usually kept at the church. Have you approached the vicar of St Lawrence?

If I only had a short time to spend, I wouldn't spend it in Stroud library! It's just a personal judgement but I would prefer to wander round the two places and look at buildings etc as people can always do lookups for you for details out of parish registers. I'm going to the library soon myself and can look up (a few!) things in the St Lawrence registers if you like.

Regards

Hi Angela,
Thank you very much for advice and  your kind offer, I may take you up on it, but I promise I won't ask you to research my whole family history!

You are quite right, I do really want to get the feel of the two places.  I have some of the addresses that my ancestors lived at and it would be lovely to have a look for them  too.  I have looked on google earth and found some of them still seem to exist.

I will probably just go to the cemetery and try my luck this time.

I can get down again reasonably easily as my sister has just moved to Worcester and it looks like a short train journey from there.

Best wishes,

Elin

Hi Elin

I'm just going off to the Stroud library to look up things for someone else. Can I look up some baptisms/marriage/burials or whatever for you while I'm there? I know you're looking for Howells but I don't know when!

Hi Angela,

That is really kind of you.  Cheesy

I would really like a birth date and any birth info  for my 3rd Gt Grandfather, Adolphus Howell, born abt 1811.  His parents were Steven and Anne.

Also if you have time a birth date for Richard Howell abt 1694, he married Jane Biddle.  Then any birth date or info for his son Steven, abt 1730.

It is very kind of you, please don't worry if you haven't time.

I am giving the library a miss this visit as I just want to soak up the area and I don't have time to do much of anything.

Many thanks,

Elin

Hi Elin

Whoops! Just missed your post  Sad Sorry about that, but I'm planning on going again next week so will check on Adolphus, Richard and Steven for you then.

I think you're absolutely right not to bother with the library - you have to book a microfiche reader in any case, and looking round your ancestors old haunts is MUCH more fun! Are you going to be here on Saturday? If so, the farmer's market in Stroud on Saturday mornings is one of the best in the country  Grin

I wasn't in the library long this time but while I was there I found a Howell baptism at St Lawrences which I thought I'd note down for you in case it was one of yours. Stroud baptisms are unique in my experience as I've not come across another parish yet that gives the father of the baby's mother. Doesn't half help in tracing families back. Anyway -

Nov 3 1808. Charles son of William Howell by his wife Mary daur of William Trotman.

I also spotted a much later one, from when the registers were formally structured -

Nov 30 Arthur Alfred Harmer Howell son of Henry James and Harriett Howell of Stroud. father's occupation brazier.

I'll get the ones you want next time. Meanwhile, have a great time looking around. If you want any help finding things/places send me a PM and I'll happily take you round!

Best wishes

hi
You mention using trains.
You should be aware that Stroud is on the Glos to Swindon line and it is possible to get from there to W-U-E by bus about 45 mins.
Alternatively:
There is a Bus service from Yate (about a mile from Yate Rly station on the Glos to Bristol line) to Wotton, about 45 mins.

Hi Angela,

Not to worry about missing my post, I thought that I might be too late, I had just had a quick look before leaving for Worcester and saw your message.  I would appreciate it very much if you could find time to look for Adolphus, Richard and Steven some time.

Thank you for the two Howells that you did find.  I am sure that Arthur Alfred Harmer (what a mouthful) Howell is one of mine.  You say his father Henry James is a brazier and that seems to be the family business.  I have only just got home and haven't immediately been able to fit them in.  Did you make a note of the year of birth?    The other one I don't know but will keep the record as it may fit later.

I got to Stroud on Monday.  It rained - a lot!  I was with my sister and we got very lost and very wet.  We took a long time to find Stroud Cemetery and without plot numbers it was impossible.   However I stumbled around in the mud and fell flat on my face across a tomb. Shocked  We were running out of time and I just happened to find a grave with an  obelisk put up to my 3rd Gt Uncle by the people of Stroud!
So it all felt worth while.  I also found a couple of places where ancestors used to live. So all felt worth while in the end.

I did enjoy Stroud but need to do it again in good weather and having done more research before coming.  St Laurences Church is shut on a Monday which was sad, I would have loved to have gone inside.

Best wishes,

Elin Smiley
