Hi
Go to Stroud library and also the library in Wotton where they have a small but useful heritage centre.

Hi Elin
It depends what sort of information you are after. Stroud library is good on local books and has quite a good set of maps plus (some) microfiche of parish records for the surrounding area. If you want parish records and things you're probably better going to the record office, although if you post which parishes you're interested in, I can tell you whether Stroud Library has them.
I can't comment on how good the heritage centre is, having never used it, but if you're not familiar with Stroud or Wotton, they are both well worth a visit in themselves. You might have to make more than one visit - one or more for records research and one to get a feel of the area
It's a great place to live - I love it!

Hi Elin
Well, Stroud library has the microfiche for St Lawrence parish records, but the plot numbers tend to be in a separate book, usually kept at the church. Have you approached the vicar of St Lawrence?
If I only had a short time to spend, I wouldn't spend it in Stroud library! It's just a personal judgement but I would prefer to wander round the two places and look at buildings etc as people can always do lookups for you for details out of parish registers. I'm going to the library soon myself and can look up (a few!) things in the St Lawrence registers if you like.
Regards
Angela

Hi Angela, That is really kind of you.
I would really like a birth date and any birth info for my 3rd Gt Grandfather, Adolphus Howell, born abt 1811. His parents were Steven and Anne.
Also if you have time a birth date for Richard Howell abt 1694, he married Jane Biddle. Then any birth date or info for his son Steven, abt 1730.
It is very kind of you, please don't worry if you haven't time.
I am giving the library a miss this visit as I just want to soak up the area and I don't have time to do much of anything.
Many thanks,
Elin

Hi Elin
Whoops! Just missed your post Sorry about that, but I'm planning on going again next week so will check on Adolphus, Richard and Steven for you then.
I think you're absolutely right not to bother with the library - you have to book a microfiche reader in any case, and looking round your ancestors old haunts is MUCH more fun! Are you going to be here on Saturday? If so, the farmer's market in Stroud on Saturday mornings is one of the best in the country
I wasn't in the library long this time but while I was there I found a Howell baptism at St Lawrences which I thought I'd note down for you in case it was one of yours. Stroud baptisms are unique in my experience as I've not come across another parish yet that gives the father of the baby's mother. Doesn't half help in tracing families back. Anyway -
Nov 3 1808. Charles son of William Howell by his wife Mary daur of William Trotman.
I also spotted a much later one, from when the registers were formally structured -
Nov 30 Arthur Alfred Harmer Howell son of Henry James and Harriett Howell of Stroud. father's occupation brazier.
I'll get the ones you want next time. Meanwhile, have a great time looking around. If you want any help finding things/places send me a PM and I'll happily take you round!
Best wishes
Angela

hi You mention using trains. You should be aware that Stroud is on the Glos to Swindon line and it is possible to get from there to W-U-E by bus about 45 mins. Alternatively: There is a Bus service from Yate (about a mile from Yate Rly station on the Glos to Bristol line) to Wotton, about 45 mins.
