Hi Stinton,

Thanks for the advice re : transport.  Sadly I missed your mesaage before I went but we did get the bus to Wotton Under Edge from Stroud.  A lovely journey it is too, through beautiful countryside.

Hi Elin

Glad the trip to Stroud was at least a bit worth while. Both Stroud and Wotton are great places to walk round and the weather improved dramatically on Tuesday  Roll Eyes

I'm sorry I missed out the year for Arthur Alfred Harmer Howell - it was 1851. I should be getting back to the library on Monday, I hope, and will look for your Adolphus etc then. Seems like the Adolphus Sue found is connected to AAHH - there can't be that many braziers of the same name in Stroud - perhaps Henry James married again. Anyway, he may fit in somewhere once you get far enough back.

Best wishes

Hi Angela,

Thanks for A.A.H.Howells' birth year.  I  had his father already but didn't have any wife or family for him.  The birth date ties them together though and I have also found them on the census.   The father is my first cousin 4 times removed.  It's mind boggling isn't it?  Roll Eyes The Adolphus that Sue found is another 1st cousin 4 times removed!

By the time we got to Wotton Under Edge the rain had stopped and the sun had appeared. Smiley  It really is a charming place and we saw the almshouses where my 4 x g.grandma lived. There is a fabulous little chapel in the courtyard.  Also the churches where many of my family were christened, married and had their funerals.

Best wishes,

Elin

Hi Elin

The good news is that I got back to Stroud library to have a look for your Howells. The bad news is that I could only find Adolphus  Sad

What I did find was Adolphus's baptism -

Jan 1 1811 Adolphus son of Stephen Howell by his wife Ann Johnson dau. of John Selby. This sort-of matches with the IGI record except that I would read the IGI record to imply that Johnson was Ann's maiden name, whereas it looks like it was Selby.

On my way through, I noticed that Stephen Howell was one of the witnesses at a large number of weddings - presumably as churchwarden or whatever.....

Looking for Richard, I found that the fiche on Stroud library start at 1714  Roll Eyes so you would need to look in Gloucester RO for that one as theirs start at 1624.

I was very puzzled about the Stephen you asked me to look for around 1730. I couldn't find him at all - mind you, some of the pages were very faint, so I can't absolutely guarantee he wasn't there, but I did check twice. When I next go back, do you want me to double check the birth entry for the Stephen of Stephen and Ann? The IGI has it at 1756, which would be about right for his marriage to Ann Selby in Cirencester in 1785. (Can't check Cirencester for you, unfortunately but someone else might be able to if you wanted)

Anyway, sorry about the limited success....

Best wishes

Hi Angela,

Thank you very much for finding the birth date for Adolphus, I'm really delighted to have that!  I have his mother as Anne Johnson Selby and many of the children in following generations have Selby as a middle name.   Stephen Howell was Stroud parish clerk for 30 years, as was his son John Selby Howell following from his death, apparently for 50 years. That would be why he was witness to so many weddings.

Now I have to do a bit of grovelling  Embarrassed . Gulp! The second Stephen from 1730 should have read Thomas.  I must have been have been in such a rush trying to type my message before you left for the library that morning that I slipped up.  I really do apologise for that.

Yes I would be grateful if you could recheck the birth of Stephen in about 1756.

It is good to know that the fiche on Stroud start in 1624 at Gloucester, I will probably get down there in summer.

It is very kind of you to have checked all this for me and it is much appreciated.

Best wishes,

Elin

Hi Elin

Glad it's all useful! I'll happily look for Thomas next time I get to the library. Are there any more siblings in that generation you'd like checking while I'm there?

I was also wondering whether you wanted burials checking. The IGI usually doesn't have those!

Best wishes

Hi Angela,

You are a love, as we say up here in Leeds!

If you wouldn't mind looking for Thomas and his siblings some time that would be brilliant. Smiley  There is Margaret, abt. 1722,   John abt. 1724,    Jane, abt. 1732,
William, abt. 1737 and John, abt 1738.   I would also be very interested if you could find the birth of Sarah Hawker, the wife of Thomas in abt. 1726.

Thomas died in abt. 1788 and it would be good to have a date for that.

Any information is really appreciated and very useful , but please only do what bits of you feel like doing.

Thanks a lot,

Elin Smiley

Hi. Does anyone know if Trinity Parish or Horsley Parish records are available to look at in Stroud Library? I am very keen to know if the father of my grandfather Ernest Ponting is mentioned. Ernest was born in Stroud in about 1898. His mother was Caroline Kate Ponting (unmarried) and on his marriage certificate he recorded his father as being William Ponting. Either they had the same surname (not unique in my family) or he made his father up.  Wink

Hi Kate,

People have been extremely  kind and helpful to me on this thread,
but I think that you might be better off starting a new topic with your query.

I imagine that many people won't bother to look at it now as it has been on the board for quite a while and you might not get much of a response.

Good luck with it. Smiley
