Complete - Can any one read the last word
« on: Friday 11 April 08 13:00 UTC (UK) »

Hi

This is an extract from the Strathmiglo baptism records of 1840.  It records the birth of Janet Dunn.  I can read everything except the last word and shall be very grateful for help and suggestions.

Thank you

Gobbo

Hi, thought it looked like Cowiefauld so stuck it in Google and got:

Cowiefauld, a hamlet in Strathmiglo parish, Fife, 2 miles WSW of Strathmiglo village.

Hi Gobbo

The 1841 Census on FREECEN has a young  Janet DURIE  at address  "Cowy Fauld " - with TOD(DS  - another source Wink suggests this Janet's  surname is DUNN)

search for David TODD age 45 in Strathmiglo
http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

Cheers

Hi Ambly, Tricia and Diddy

Goodness that was quick - I thought that I was looking at some arcane Scottish legal term!  Cowiefauld it must be so thank you all very much.

I have looked at the Dun site - that is what started my attempt to see Janet's birth record - The Duns on the Dun site all seemed very respectable, not the sort of people who would associate with my disreputable ancestors.  It would be good to know a little more about John Dun and I looked up the birth/baptism register hoping to find his occupation but it's not there.  The Dun site had a Fife John Dun but he was a Commissioner and probably not my John.  There are a few local Johns listed in the census with ordinary occupations and I expect it was one of thembut I do not know which.

Thank you again for such a quick and good response.

Good luck

Hi Ambly and Tricia

I have traced Janet Dun in the 1841, 51 and 61 censuses.  Mary Todd married David Pottie on 4 Mar 1847 and Janet was living in the Pottie household at the time of the 51 and 61 censuses.  In the 61 census she is called Jessie Dun.  On 13 Sep 1861 she had a child, Albert James Dun, who was brought up by his grandparents as Albert Jackson.  (I am confident that the Jackson father was an Englishman, Charles Jackson, who was a linen manufacturer in Fifeshire and who subsequently married another Scots girl, Janet Walker.)  I have lost track of Janet/Jessie Dun after 1861 but have recently bought fresh credits on Scotlandspeople and hope to track her down a bit further.

Thank you again for all your help

All the best

Hi vbain

Welcome to rootschat.  It's a lovely site for people to help each other with their genealogical problems.

With my birth record, I should have looked more closely at the other entries on the page and perhaps realised that the last word was always a location.  I might then have guessed Cowiefauld since that was Janet's address in the census a few months later.  Anyway the good folk on this site soon put me right.

All the best with your genealogy
