Susannah and Edward James Fayrer in 1864.

Hello, 
Could someone kindly look to see if they can see any sign of a birth record for me? I've tried without success & think it needs fresh eyes and mind!! 
Alfred Thomas J Fayrer, born about 1867 in Dartmouth. (1871 census has him aged 4 and 1901 census has him aged 36) His parents were Edward and Susannah Fayrer. Father a Royal Naval Musician at HMS Brittania.

Hi KateW,
Registration was not compulsory for another 10 years (approx) so he might not have been registered.
Perhaps look for a baptism.

Older brother Edward James is in Totnes reg district which is right for Dartmouth in 1865.......younger brother William George is in Postsea which is right for his place of birth in 1868, he maybe mis- transcribed

Thanks for your replies Nanny Jan and Tazzie,
I have certified copies of birth entries for Edward James 5th Jan 1864 in Dartmouth, William George 21 Dec 1867 in Portsea.
I have all 3 boys, Edward James aged 6, Alfred Thomas aged 4 and William George aged 2 together in the 1871 Census (surname mis-transcribed as Fayner) There was another boy, Raymond born 20 March 1870 but he died in 1871 before the census. There is an elder sister Jane who was born on Ascension Island (abt.1859) aged 12, I haven't found her birth record either - quite an age gap and I have wondered if there may have been more children who died.

OK, thanks, looks like I need to spend a day in Dartmouth, what a treat!! My brother lives there so perhaps I can persuade him to come hunting with me.
