ad blockers
« on: Wednesday 16 April 08 15:44 UTC (UK) »

Hi All

Can anyone recommend a good ad blocker - I'm getting really fed up with them.  Am I alone or does anyone else feel the same way?

Thanxs for taking the time to reply.

A lot depends on which type of ads you want to stop.

The browser you are using and the firewall you are using can also both affect the type of blocker you need/want.

For example Firefox has an add on "ad blocker" which is so effective some sites which rely on advertising to survive block any browsers using this add on.

Zonealarm has a pretty effective blocker built into the pro version (I don't know about the free version as I haven't looked at that for a while)

as to feeling the same way - yes & no ..... it costs a considerable amount to maintain a large website and the options for financing are limited   - charge for entry   or use advertisements. A case in point is Rootschat - the ads help maintain it as a free site.

If you are using IE7 it has a built-in ad-blocker.

Are they adverts?

That is an important question because if you are seeing the same advert all the time then you have a trojan (a fake spyware program) installed in which case they are not pop-up adverts as such but part of the trojan program.

Most browsers have pop-up blockers so you should not see any pop-ups at all.

If you are seeing pop-ups on a regular basis then they may be fake pop-ups.
Some websites will display a message box in the middle of the screen that gives the appearance of being a pop-up and will ask you to press YES or NO but this is not actually a pop-up it is part of the webpage.

If your PC is running slow then you may have a problem i.e. a virus.
